To the cosmopolitan and the agnostic, the Goddess’ homecoming is just an occasion to blend street festivities with gluttony. But to those less inclined to paint expressions of faith in secular colours, Durga Puja denotes the worship of shakti and the triumph of good over evil.

Unlike the Goddess Kali, another manifestation of shakti, with whom devotees have an intensely personal relationship, the ethos of the five-day invocation of Durga is congregational. Till the early-20th century, family pujas were the norm; today, community worship funded by small donations and corporate sponsorship are all pervasive. True, many pujas have turned unappetisingly bling. But these distortions shouldn’t detract from the underlying theme of the festival: the bonding of family, community, society and nation in a common reaffirmation of dharma. The symbolic destruction of Ravana on Dussehra in northern India underscores the same message.

This year’s celebrations, tragically, are likely to be muted. Whether we admit it or not, silent fear has gripped urban India. With one serial blast following another, there is concern that someone may end up at the wrong place at the wrong time - with deadly consequences. As yet there is no widespread alarm but many families all over India have decided to keep their outings during the festive season to a bare minimum. There are no geographical limits set by the bombers. The blasts could happen anywhere because the terrorists have one clear objective: to create maximum panic.

For more than a year, India has faced terror with the proverbial stiff upper lip. There have been no sectarian recriminations and even the provocative emails of the Indian Mujahideen have been met by a combination of resilience and black humour. A dandy union home minister has become the butt of jokes, not because we seriously believe that the government can provide foolproof security, but because lampooning an incompetent politician is the least disagreeable alternative to doing nothing.

Yet, something has changed over the months. TV channels have quietly ceased to invoke the celebrity-led “spirit” of civic resilience that greeted, say, the July 11, 2006, bombings in Mumbai. After the Ahmedabad blasts on July 26 this year, a cabinet minister floated the disgusting theory that the bombings were state-sponsored. When the blasts recurred in Delhi on September 13, he retreated behind pop sociology, trying to identify the “root cause” of terrorism.

Over the weeks, the contrived piousness of the liberals has been overshadowed by growing impatience with those who are seen to be soft on terror. The outpouring of grief at the death of Delhi police inspector M C Sharma signified a loud public affirmation of robust counter-terrorism - even if it involves emulating Dirty Harry. There were no spirited interventions in support of Jamia Millia Islamia’s vice chancellor Mushirul Hasan when he succumbed to sectional pressure and threw his institutional weight behind two alleged student-terrorists - one enrolled in a course on Human Rights! And there was a lot of grimacing after some clerics and politicians went over the top, equated counter-terrorism with a witch-hunt of educated Muslims and swore electoral vengeance.

When fear and anger combine, the signs are ominous. Exasperated by the excesses of Mahishashura - who, too, had a form of divine blessing - the Gods joined hands to create a Durga and endowed her with the deadliest weapons from their arsenal. The personification of shakti was then entrusted with saving the three worlds from the terrible demon. The awesome Durga prevailed over evil and facilitated the return of decency. Later, Lord Ram invoked Durga out of season to bless his campaign against Ravana. This week’s puja follows Ram’s calendar of war.

This Durga Puja will be less celebratory. Yet, the prayers for collective strength, leadership and wisdom to defeat the newest manifestation of evil must be even more compelling.
Swapan Dasgupta

Now Buddhist under threat of proselytisation.

Subtle moves are on for conversion of Buddhist Chakmas in certain areas of Mizoram and Tripura and also to take away their land for construction of churches. “These kinds of activities have been going on for sometime,” alleged Shri Basant Kumar Chakma.

Kantalang is a Chakma dominated village in the Phailo subdivision of Mammit district of Mizoram, bordering Tripura. Peace loving Buddhists of the village are gripped with panic due to missionaries’ interference with the backing of the state.

Shri Basant Kumar further said, “Three months ago, a Mizo missionary came to their village from Phailo and demanded land for the construction of a church. No villager agreed to part with land. The Mizo youth sought and got administrative help and held out open threat if land was not given, he would see that no government benefit or financial assistance under various centrally sponsored schemes and projects reached them. The sub-divisional magistrate of Phailo sent a written order to the village headman, Prabhat Kumar Chakma, to allot land for the purpose.

The order of the sub-divisional magistrate was followed by the entry of members of Presbyterian church in the village. Necessary preparation was being made to begin construction of church. Shri Basant Chakma further alleged that as a tactical move, a Bangladeshi from across the border was brought and engaged in construction work. The land in question was earmarked for a school for Chakma boys and girls.

Chakma Women’s Organisation and Young Chakma Association joined together to resist the design of missionaries. Shri Basant Chakma was all praise for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and BSF which helped them during their crisis. Though the construction of the church at the moment has been held up, Chakmas are apprehensive that peace and harmony might be disturbed.

In another related development, Ramapada Jamatiya who came down here from Tripura said a Buddhist Academy at Manu Bankal Sabroom was set ablaze by miscreants recently. In fact, as he pointed out, Dhampa Dipa International Buddhist Academy with three residential Viharas sheltering 180 Buddhist monks and devotees who used to reside, study and practice dhamma, was in flames in mysterious circumstances. It is suspected that someone or the other might have caused the fire from outside as such threat perception has been looming large from the very inception.

Shri Jamatiya said it was most unfortunate that Buddhism has been under attack in different parts of northeast. Neither the local administration nor any state official cared to visit Sabroom to see for themselves the Buddhist Academy in ruins. He revealed that a representation from Bahujan Hitaya Education Trust of Sabroom to Governor of Tripura on August 25 seeking his intervention and action failed to evoke any response.

The Education Trust reiterated that the Governor of Tripura should visit the ruined site of Buddhist Academy and direct the state administration to provide adequate security to the institution. The Trust at the same time demanded financial assistance to reconstruct the Buddhist Academy, identification of culprits behind the crime and their trial as well as punishment and all necessary protective measures in order to pre-empt such incident in future.
Jyoti Lal Chowdhury.

No Hindu festivals for north east

Separatist group bans Hindu festivities

The leading separatist group in the north-east Indian state of Tripura has ordered indigenous tribespeople to stay away from celebrations of the Hindu festival Durga Puja.

The outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura warned that any tribal members seen taking part in the festival would be killed.

In a statement, the NLFT said it wanted all tribespeople in Tripura to become Christians because the practice of Hinduism has led to them being marginalised by people of Bengali origin living in the state.

The Durga Puja is the biggest festival to be celebrated by Hindus from Bengal.

But Hindu tribal leaders have said they will defy the ban and take part in the celebrations.

From the newsroom of the BBC World Service

>...................................................................................<

Why this had happened in north east? The media coverage of the disturbances in both Orissa and Karnataka and the action taken by the Centre are so one-sided as to make any fair-minded person feel extremely worried.
I am not a practising Hindu, perform no rituals or ceremonies and have no religious hangups. Further, having worked directly under Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi [Images] for nine years (1961-9) as the secretary of the National Integration Council from its very inception (besides my other duties in the political division of the Union home ministry), I have savoured from close quarters the spirit that animated the heroes of pre-Independence era. Hence, in sharing my uneasiness with readers, I have tried my best to rise above any prejudices or preconceptions, and appraise events on the touchstone of fair-play and freedom from bias.

To anyone for whom the print and electronic media were the only sources of information, it would seem that the Hindu fanatics, behaving like dreaded terrorists, had been making killing fields of both Orissa and Karnataka, by indulging in murderous attacks on Christian minorities, and the destruction of sacred religious places.

The emerging picture of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal -- all subsumed under the pejorative rubric Sangh Parivar or the Saffron Brigade (why not, by the same token, call the Congress the Quattrochi Brigade or the Left the Hammer-and-Sickle Brigade?) -- is that, encouraged from behind the scenes by the communal monster, the Bharatiya Janata Party, they are ruthlessly going on a violent spree, just to vent their hatred of minorities. In short, the impression given is that swarms of totally insane thugs are on a rampage without any provocation whatsoever, holding both states to ransom, and the state governments, in open sympathy with them, have done little to prevent their excesses.

Not the best way

God knows there have been condemnable incidents making innocent Christians fear for their lives. There can be no wishing away of the despicable and wilful desecration and destruction of places of worship in Khandamal in Orissa and in some places, including Bengaluru [Images], in Karnataka. Certainly, any wanton resort to violence should be put down with an iron hand and peace and harmony among all sections of the people restored at all costs.

Only a dispassionate and disinterested inquiry can credibly establish whether in the particular cases of attacks on churches, the respective state governments acted with due sense of urgency and concern for the well-being of the affected communities. Sending on a hurried visit some functionaries from the home ministry toeing the official line, unfamiliar with local conditions and listening to only the slanted version, is not the best way of getting at the truth.

Also, it must be remembered that it is, and will always be, a matter of judgement whether more or less could or should have been done by the state or central authorities to enforce the law, round up the ruffians and quell the disturbances in any particular set of circumstances. Such cases cannot be weighed on a fine scale. I say this having dealt with a number of instances of violent outbreaks and insurgency during my nine years in the home ministry and two years as chief secretary of a north-eastern state. Journalists and columnists, enjoying the good fortune of never having to manage crisis situations, should, therefore, think many times before showering their verdicts on the happenings, and especially guard against saying or writing anything approaching character assassination.

If ideal benchmarks of adequacy and promptness of action were to be applied, no central or state government will shape up. The notorious indifference and connivance exhibited by the government of the day in 1984, when more than 4000 innocent Sikh men, women and children were hounded from place to place and burnt alive and butchered in cold blood, and the palpable failure to visit the perpetrators with condign punishment, will continue to haunt the memory of all right-thinking persons.

Original sin

Even today, the popular perception is that terrorism is getting its impetus from the hamstringing of the police and security agencies by the ruling coalition at the Centre which wants to nurture its Muslim vote banks and that it handles the Tamil Nadu government with kid gloves when it deliberately sets about outraging the sentiments of the Hindus. Hence, in a sense, every government in India, both at the Centre and the states, is living in a glass house and is hardly in a position to throw stones at others.

All the reports and commentaries that I have seen on the disturbances in Orissa and Karnataka, neatly sidestep the original sin and the consequential long-simmering discontent among the Hindus. They make it look as if the attackers, who were readily assumed to be members of the 'Saffron Brigade', were madly running amok without any justification. Reams have been written and billions of sound bytes have gone on air describing in lurid detail all that has happened to the churches and the Christian community, with no equal space given for the real cause of all the trouble.

Swami Lakshmananda was a revered figure in Orissa who was engaged in service to the weaker and vulnerable sections of the population. Allegedly, the local Christian votaries of conversion saw him as a thorn in their flesh. Whatever that be, the fact was that some time ago, he was the victim of attack by a gang bent on doing away with him. Luckily, he escaped at that time, but his enemies had their way the second time.

The Centre could have set all speculation at rest if, with all the mighty and extensive intelligence and investigative machinery at its disposal, it had ascertained the truth behind the murders of the Swami and his associates and unhesitatingly named the desperadoes. Its own inability, or unwillingness, to expose the forces that were behind the killing should be taken to have contributed to the flare-up that followed in Khandamal.

Extreme provocation

Similarly, as regards Mangalore and Bengaluru, those who are quick to castigate the state government gloss over the extreme provocation contained in an obnoxious pamphlet, Satya [Images] Darshini, in Kannada language, circulated in the name of an outfit called the New Life Church, scathingly scandalising Hindu gods and goddesses in the foulest of language.

I want to ask of the holier-than-thou commentators to place their hand on their hearts and tell me whether similar scurrilous observations about what is regarded as holy and sacred would be tolerated by any community anywhere in the world. Suppose someone were to write and distribute similar things about other gods and their messengers, will not the whole of India be convulsed by the mother of conflagrations? Will not the intellectuals and professed secularists then be trumpeting only the atrocious nature of the provocation, without saying a word on the massacring of innocents in every city at the hands of hooligans?

One need not even go as far as gods and goddesses: Suppose one's wife or parents are the targets of such scatological stuff distributed far and wide? Would one smile it away? Or, suppose one exhibits in a public forum paintings of particular individuals and their kith and kin in the nude, will those individuals celebrate it as an expression of artistic freedom? Why then show this perverse support to sacrilege perpetrated against Hinduism alone and work overtime lambasting the spontaneous reaction of largely simple and pious people who are sustained in their quotidian hardships by their faith in their gods and goddesses?

To me, somehow, it does not stand to reason or common sense.

There is yet another aspect of this perversity. It gives a handle to foreign governments and busybodies to bad mouth India as a den of fanatical Hindus who love nothing better than being at the throats of persons of other faiths. A country which rained death and destruction on Iraq by flaunting a tissue of lies, indulged in unspeakable atrocities in Abu Ghraib and for the last eight years, is keeping Muslim detenus in Guantanamo Bay without trial and treating them as worse than vermin, denies visa to Narendra Modi [Images] to the resounding applause of self-styled secularists who do not realise the egregious nature of the insult to the entire nation.

In sum, the secularism as practised in the country is letting it down, besides polarising the population. It is time a body of persons reputed for their objectivity and erudition went into the meaning and implications of secularism and communalism. Nehru set up a Committee in 1961 for this purpose under the chairmanship of Asoka Mehta of which Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Prof Mujeeb were among the members. Unfortunately, its labours were interrupted by the Chinese invasion of 1962, and it was wound up. Getting going from where it left off is eminently worthwhile.

B S Raghavan is a retired IAS officer who was a member of the Joint Intelligence Committee, Director of Political and Security Policy Planning in the home ministry, and chief secretary of a state

Financers of SIMI

Indian Muslims Organizations in US are funding Terrorism in India

AHMEDABAD: The Surat SIMI conference, it is believed, was organized by an assistant professor in Jodhpur University, Abdulhai Abdulsattar Silavat, with two others whose names are still not known. The prime objective of this meet was the recruitment of Muslim youth after the ban was imposed in September 2001.

During the course of the investigation, the police intercepted emails by a SIMI activist from Ahmedabad, Suhel Patel. Suhel was a US-born Indian from Paguthan village in Bharuch district of south Gujarat, living in Ahmedabad for nearly 15 years.

The email messages revealed vital information on the financial support being provided by two US-based organizations: the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Chicago-based Consultative Committee of Indian Muslims (CCIM).
One of the messages dated December 11, 2001 contained a Rs 1.24-crore proposal forwarded by Suhel to one mehman (guest) for sustaining the SIMI movement following its ban in September that year. The break-up of the fund was thus - Rs 48 lakh for the families of the arrested SIMI leaders and Rs 25 lakh as legal aid for fighting their court cases.

Suhel had asked for Rs 12 lakh for offering scholarships for thoseworking for the "cause" and another Rs 7 lakh to launch a magazine on "Muslim brotherhood and making Muslims aware of the fast-changing situation in the Islamic world".

In his confession to then Surat joint commissioner of police Ashish Bhatia, Suhel confessed to drawing up the proposal following a directive from the then SIMI President Shahid Badr Falahi.

Suhel revealed that one of his brothers-in-law Yasin Ghulamrasool Patel, who owned a printing press in Ahmedabad had travelled to Chicago for collecting funds for SIMI. Suhel was one of the many recruited by Badr to amass funds for SIMI.

Other e-mail messages in Suhel's account show how money is being transferred from the US to India. Rafik, his Chicago-based brother-in-law, has written to him about an ISNA conference in the US attended by delegates from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Singapore and India on August 31, 2000.

Rafik's email to one Chicago-based Professor Munnawar Hussein "of the Jamaat" explains the new operations for SIMI which was to target universities, unions, women, farmers and local field workers and create a political wing of SIMI. Rafik had also advised Patel to delete every message as soon as it has been read.

The Islamic Society of North American (ISNA) (www.isna.net)
Consultative Committee of Indian Muslims (CCIM)
Indian Muslims Council - USA (http://www.imc-usa.org/)

Modi, need of the hour: Cho Ramaswami

‘No politician in this country thinks that Kashmir belongs to India. The protests by Muslims in the valley against the land allotment to Amarnath Shrine Board is condemnable and PDP leader Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is a ‘divisionist’ masquerading as a politician.’

This observation was made by Thuglak editor and political analyst Cho Ramaswami at a symposium on ‘Partisan Politics - Implications for National Security’, organised by Vigil Public Opinion Forum in Chennai on Tuesday.

.
The firebrand journalist further said Kashmir problem could be solved by enlarging the State by adding the nearby areas to it thereby making it a bigger State resulting in the change in demography, which would automatically force the Muslims to reduce their agitations, as they would become a minority then.

‘Sardar Patel would have done it had he been alive and Narendra Modi will do it and If Advani becomes the Prime Minister, I will urge him to make Modi as the Home Minister’, he added.

Cho called for an anti-terror law more stringent than the POTA. He cited the new anti-terror law enacted by the US in the aftermath of 9/11, which requires even the lawyers to part with information on terrorists.

He also averred that all the terror acts are executed with local help and a stringent anti-terror law would certainly help in curtailing the ‘helpers’ if not the terrorists. ‘Punishing the supporters itself would bring down the scale of terror acts’, he said.

The scribe came down heavily on Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and AICC president Sonia Gandhi for blatantly being soft on terror. He referred to the spurt in LTTE activities in the State, the elegy written by Karunanidhi for mourning the death of a LTTE leader and Sonia’s daughter Priyanka’s meeting with Nalini at the Vellore prison.

He also condemned the repeal of POTA, softness on SIMI and the prolonged postponement of hanging of Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru and said that the Congress party is the most and worst ‘communal’ party in the country, as it equates terrorism with the Muslim community as a whole, by such actions having votebank in mind.

He minced no words in telling that the so-called human rights organisations and activists are the greatest ‘curse’ on India, as they always bother about the rights of terror elements and never bother about the rights of the victims.

He also said that they have become a huge impediment in the country’s anti-terror measures. He concluded by saying, ‘the world will respect only a winner and not a failed nation and hence the people must vote for a change of government if they want India to be a winner’

Speaking on the occasion, former director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Ajith Doval said, ‘Response capability is a must for any nation to deal with terror. The capacity to respond effectively with all kinds of threats posed by terrorists can be developed only when the elected representatives work with responsibility. India being a vibrant democracy, it must enact a very effective anti-terror law and the same must be executed and implemented with utmost conscientiousness’.

Explaining in detail the grave situation at the borders covering thousands of kilometers, Ajit said, ‘India has a huge land frontier and 94 per cent of its borders are close to hostile nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and Nepal, while only six per cent is close to a friendly and harmless nation Bhutan.

The borders are extremely porous leading to infiltration of illegal immigrants and Islamic militants from Bangladesh and Pakistan and naxalites and Maoists from Nepal and insurgents from Mayanmar. China has very friendly relations with all these nations and in this kind of a grave scenario on the borders, it becomes imperative for India to strengthen the security of it borders with separate BSF for each neighbour’.

The former IB director dealt extensively with the hopeless situation of internal security touching upon the spread of Islamic terrorism throughout the country from Kashmir to Tamilnadu and the spread of Naxals in more than 14 States affecting around 175 districts with an average recruitment of 1000 cadres every year, He also condemned the anti-national activities of a few foreign funded NGOs and specifically the Wahabiism cultivated by Middle- East through funding, constructing and maintaining Nurseries and Madarasas.

He also came down heavily on the votebank politics played by the majority of national and regional political parties, particularly those in the UPA. He concluded by saying that ‘an effective anti-terror law will send a strong message to the terrorists and their helpers and it will also send a message of morale booster to the general public’.

http://newstodaynet.com/newsindex.php?id=10595%20&%20section=7

Who cares for a burning temple

A temple burns after protesters set it ablaze in Vadodara on Monday

....................................................................................

Bloody communal b@stard hindus again under undermining the great secular ethos of this country, tries to carry their ganesha idol in front of a heritaged muslim ghetto . It is beyond definition. Hindutva is neither Hindu religion, nor a political ideology. It cannot be expressed in concrete terms. It is an abstract value system that manifests itself in behaviour and reactions of Hindus in general. It is a mindset that Hindus have inherited. It represents their collective psyche. It is a way of life for that defines description. Just as fragrance permeates the whole being of a flower, so does Hindutva in relation to Hindu society in particular and Indians in general. An attempt can certainly be made to identify this fragrance.

:- When I was a child, my mother would not let me go to garden to pluck a flower, fruit or leaf at night. Her explanation was that plants sleep at night. They should not be disturbed. Prevention of cruelty not only to animals, but even to plants, is Hindutva.

:- No religious book lays down that Hindus should feed the ants. Yet in many traditional localities, people going on the morning walk may be seen packets of white flour or sugar grains for the ants to feed. What motivates them to do so? Obviously Hindutva.

:- With the occupation of India by the British, the study of English became the only passport for the government jobs and other careers for both Hindus and Muslims. It was a level playing ground for both of them. Why Hindus took to western education with enthusiasm, and Muslims lagged behind? The result is that today the Hindus are educationally far more advanced than Muslims. This differing attitude towards education can only be explained by Hindutva and not Hinduism.

:- No religious book of Hindus lays down that all Hindus should be exclusively vegetarians. In fact, in ancient times, number of animals were killed as sacrifice to appease a goddess in temple precincts. Still this practice is in vogue in certain remote parts of the country. And not all Hindus are vegetarians. Yet vegetarianism is regarded as a virtue by Hindus in general. Even those who partake meat would not be able to suffer cruelty to animals or watch them being slaughtered.

:- On the auspicious occasion of Nagpanchami, there is a tradition for feeding milk to snakes. Symbolically, a bowl of milk is kept overnight in some remote corner of the house in evening and next morning it is presumed that snake has partaken it. This ritual symbolises Hindus respect for all living beings, even for venomous snakes. No Hindu scripture lays down any injunction in this regard. Yet, Hindus do so. Only Hindutva can explain this phenomenon.

:- Till not in too distant past, in most of Hindu households, the first bread baked in kitchen was given to a cow and the last bread was for crows and dogs. No scripture of Hindus lays down such tradition. Yet Hindus did so. Why? Only Hindutva is the answer.

:- It is universally known that Jewish people were persecuted in all countries of the world, wherever they migrated or took refuge, except in India. India is the only country of the world, where Jewish people were not prosecuted. Instead they were respected and given full freedom to build their synagogues and follow their religion. What makes Indians different from other people of the world? It is Hindutva.

:- Before the Arab invasion, people of Iran followed Zoroastrianism. It was a religion founded by their prophet Zarthustra in 1500 BC, with their god’s name as Ahur Mazda. After the Arab invasion and conquest, the Iranians were forcibly converted to Islam. Those who refused were either killed or escaped to the other countries seeking refuge. A group of such Iranian refugees (called Parsis by Indians) sought shelter in India more than a thousand years ago. The Hindu king who had granted the shelter did not put any condition on them and gave them full freedom to pursue their religion. Why did he do so? Obviously he was conditioned by Hindutva.

:- Mohammad Ghori, the Turkish King of Ghazni (Afghanistan) founder of Muslim rule in India, defeated the Hindu king Prithviraj Chauhan in the battle Tarain (1192) and thereby assured the Muslim occupation of the country that lasted seven centuries. The defeated Prithviraj was imprisoned and beheaded. Only a year earlier, the Hindu king had inflicted a crushing defeat on the invading forces of Mohammad Ghori and captured him. But Prithiviraj decided to be chivalrous. He pardoned Mohammad Ghori and released him. Why did Prithiviraj not kill his defeated foe Mohammad Ghori, the way latter killed the former in identical situation? The answer is Hindutva.

:- India was Partitioned in 1947 on purely religious basis. Muslims living in India before the Partition declared under the leadership of Mohammad Ali Jinnah that Hindus and Muslims constitute two different nations and the two cannot live together. Indian Muslims should have a country of their own. To coerce the Hindus leaders of the Congress Party to accede to their demand of Partition of the country, the ‘Muslim League’ unleashed the reign of terror and killing of Hindus. To prevent further bloodshed, the Congress Party, consisting mostly Hindu leaders was unnerved and gave in. Pakistan was carved out of India which promptly declared itself a Muslim theocratic State. Logically India should have declared itself a Hindu State, but it did not do so. Instead it chose to be a secular State. Why? The answer is ‘Hindutva’.

:- At the time of creation of Pakistan, it’s Hindu population was 24 per cent of its total population. Today it is hardly one per cent. Against it, the population of Muslims in India at the time of Partition was 8 per cent. Today it is about 15 per cent. Pakistan got rid of Hindu population by killing Hindus, converting them to Islam or forcing them to migrate and take refuge in India. There was some reaction to Hindu killings in Pakistan in India but the Indian Government, overwhelmingly manned by Hindus, largely contained it and crushed the Hindu retaliation. Unlike Hindus in Pakistan, Muslims in India have prospered in last six decades, numerically and economically. Why did the Hindu leadership of Congress Party in India did not react to Pakistani atrocity on Hindus and pursued a different policy? The answer in Hindutva.

:-The Muslim rule in large parts of India lasted for about seven hundred years (precisely from 1192 to 1857). During these centuries, it was customary for the Muslim rulers to inflict worst possible atrocities on Hindu population. Hindu massacre was a normal feature then. The women were worst sufferers. Thousands of Hindu women were interned in the harems of Sultans and nobility. But when Shivaji, the mighty Hindus rebel of Maharashtra (South west India) revolted against fanatic and fundamentalist Mugal ruler Aurangzeb and conquered the town of Surat, his generals captured the beautiful wife of its Muslim governor following the practice of the Muslim rulers of the day, they decided to repay them in their coins. They presented her to Shivaji. He looked at her for sometime. Then told her—“How I wish you were my mother.” There was an uneasy pause all around. He further said “Then I would have been as beautiful as you are”. He ordered his subordinates to treat her courteously and restore her to her family. Yet Shivaji did as he did. This conduct was guided by the elusive mindset which is Hindutva.

:- After Independence, distribution of land to landless farm labour was a challenge. Before the government could bring legislation, Gandhian leader Acharya Vinoba Bhave came up with a novel idea to the problem and went about the country to appeal to the land-owners to donate part of their holdings to the landless. What inspired him to do so? Obviously Hindutva.

:-According to an estimate, about 30,000 Hindu, Buddhist and Jain Temples were destroyed in over 700 years of Muslim rule in India. Ram, Krishna and Shiva are the most revered deities of Hindu pantheon. Rama Temple at Ayodhya, Krishna Temple at Mathura and Shiva (Vishwanath) Temple at Varanasi where demolished by Mughal emperors. But even in mediaeval times, the Hindu rulers like Shivaji, Rana Pratap, Chhatrasaal, Guru Govind Singh and Vijay Nagar Kings never retaliated by destroying a mosque. Respect of other religions in integral to Hindutva.

The above examples are illustrative of Hindutva-in-action. Hindutva is manifested in religious tolerance, harmony with nature and the animal world, forgiveness, acceptance of disagreement, non-aggression, brotherhood of mankind pluralism, diversity in unity, etc.

Hindutva and Hinduism

The words Hindu, Hindutva and Hinduism are not synonymous. They are different with distinctive connotation. A Hindu is one who is adherent of Hindu religion while Hinduism indicates the religion based on Hindu beliefs, scriptures, gods, after life, rituals and mode of worship etc. All Hindus who follow Hinduism are characterised by certain mindset, distinctive behaviour and attitude which can be called ‘Hindu-ness’. Hindutva is thus ‘Hindu-ness’.

Hindutva is certainly not Hinduism. But Hindutva is a mindset that is based on Hinduism, which itself is imbued with Indian culture. Hindutva is thus representative of Indian cultural ethos, transcending the narrow boundaries of different religions.

Hindutva and Indianness

There is no difference in Hindutva and Indian-ness. It implies that even non-Hindus, living in India have a mindset, to a greater or lesser degree, inspired by Hindutva.

What distinguishes Indian Muslims from rest of the world is their Hindutva (Hinduness or Indianness) inspired mindset.

The Shia-Sunni differences are almost as old as the Islam itself. The strife between the two is a fact of history. In the aftermath of the downfall of Saddam’s dictatorship in Iraq, the bloody conflict between the two Islamic communities is a reality, impossible to be brushed aside. Nearer home, in Pakistan, Shias and Sunnis do not pray in one mosque. They pray in separate mosques. Their communal militant organisations frequently kill each other and put bombs in their rival’s mosques. But it is not so in India. Here the Shia-Sunni divide is not that sharp. They pray in same mosque and the riots between the two are a rarity.

Summing up, it can be said that Hindutva is a mindset shared by all Indians, in larger or lesser degrees, Hindutva can also be defined as an abstract value system bequeathed by Indian culture and shared by all Indians irrespective of their religious affiliations. Hindutva is thus a secular concept.
By D.P. From ram vilas paswan, laloo, miya mulayam to morally right congress netas, each one of them are now following there(b'deshis) trail. All this started after a report by director general of BSF A K Mitra, that there are atleast 12 lakh legal bangladeshis missing now who have entered india with all valid documents.
Legal bangladeshis? and what about those who had entered illegally? They count near about 4 crore here in india.

But wait, before u jump guns and think that these netas are now serious about these illegal bangladeshi problem, please wait.
Elections are coming and now these so called sickular parties want there share of these illegal bangladeshis. For what? just give them some land to grab, let them have fake voter id, and here's your potential share of voters.

Ram vilas pawas was first to make a move, he demanded that they should be granted Indian Citizenships, commies are not far behind to join the corus. This is not for the first time, earlier also these parties have well shared these illegal bangladeshis.

Where are these bangladeshis? you don't need to be a nano-tech scientist to find them, just take a walk in any indian buzzing city.I am from delhi so i can tell u of my state, the problem is chaotic. Recently a survey in delhi shows that there is spike in number of Muslim voters by almost 14.2% in the case of males and 19.8% in the case of females between 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 resulting in an overall spike of 16.4%. This is in sharp contrast to the organic growth in number of overall voters of only 3.2%.

It cant be population growth or mass immigration from other states, so what made that happen? ya! you got it there.

This grave problem made a municiple councilor from gujarat MAYUR DAVE write a plea to the goverment, he writes:

Respected Sir,
Our Central Government has to take strong action against infiltration from Bangladesh. Due to this infiltration from Bangladesh, it impacts the worst effect on economical situation of India.

1. Illegal inflators of Bangladesh get ration card, passport and election ID card in India by using illegal evidence. Due to this situation, so many citizen of India have not get so many facilities behalf of this, those illegal Bangladeshi people have get facilities from money of tax payer of India.

2. Most of the illegal Muslim inflators of Bangladesh are illiterate and poor. They are doing hard work with taking less incentive after infiltration. Due to this situation Indian Farmer labor do not get work. So, they face problem of unemployment and also increase social dissatisfaction. Indian political party CPI & CPM don’t give attention on this matter. Muslim inflitrators of Bangladesh are only reason of Poorness & starvation in different states & cities of India like Assam, Calcutta, Bombay, Ahmedabad, lakhnaw, Ranchi, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Ganganagar & Patana.

3. Constant Muslim infiltration from Bangladesh is also dangerous for boarder area of India. They are doing anti-social activities like duplication of currency of India, illegal transportation & manufacturing of weapons, sale of prohibited narcotics substance at the place of boarders. It is badly affects the economy of India.

4. In 1941, only 30% HINDUS were in Bangladesh but it decreases to 22% in 1951. In 1991 it decreases to 11.3%. Nowadays How many HINDUS are there in the Bangladesh is the BIG question? From last 10 years more than 1.5 to 2 crores Bangladeshis are illegally migrated in India. Recently the population analyzer Shairf Begam has given the statement that more than 2 crore citizen are missing at the time of counting of population after 1991. Where are they? They are in India only.

The CONGRESS government, NHRC, NGO have to attempt to take strong action against 2 crore Muslim Bangladeshi inflators. President of India have to take keen interest in this important matter. It is right time to take strong decision otherwise we will have to get ready to face the worst situation in future.

Meet the fockers

Tarun J. As a term, it is not per se a synonym for the male sexual organ, as some would believe. Linga indicates what is outstanding and determinative. In this regard, the male sexual organ can be said to be the distinguishing characteristic or linga of a man at a physical level, but linga in other contexts can have quite a different meaning.

In Yoga philosophy, the term linga refers to the subtle body, which is the dominant principle in our nature over the physical body. The Shiva linga is also the subtle body and can indicate the upper region from the heart to the head. The linga is a place where energy is held, generated and sustained.

The Shiva linga represents the ascending energy of consciousness and life in nature
We see this in such forms as the mountain, the thunder cloud, the tree, and the upright human being. Many lingas like that at Kedarnath - the most important Shiva site in the Himalayas - are rocks in the shape of small mountains. Many other lingas are associated with light, the lingas of the Sun, the Moon and Fire. There are the twelve famous Jyotirlingas or light forms of Shiva at twelve special temples throughout India.

The Shiva energy is the upward current running through the spine or Sushumna and the Shakti energy is the horizontal current through which it travels, forming the various lotuses of the chakras. Together they form a spiral of forces. Both forces are necessary to create this dynamic motion.

The experience of the Shiva linga in Yogic meditation is an experience of a pillar of light, energy, peace and eternity, expanding the mind, opening the inner eye and bringing deep peace and steadiness to the heart. From it radiate waves, currents, circles and whirlpools of Shakti spreading this grace, love and wisdom to all. To concentrate our awareness in the linga is one of the best ways of meditation, calming the mind and putting us in touch with our inner Being and Witness beyond all the agitation and sorrow of the world.

To understand the ultimate secrets of life we must be able to look at the primal powers of existence, including the needs for sex and food, according to their broader connections and universal implications. Human sexuality is only one of the many manifestations of the cosmic forces of duality, of a greater Divine sexuality as it were, which transcends all creaturely existence.

We must learn to see the cosmic energy behind human sexuality rather than try to reduce spiritual polarities to our own physical and emotional inclinations. This is another aspect of Yoga in which we must look beyond human psychology to the universal consciousness.

By Vamadeva

Ram-setu, save our heritage.

The very moment you say "save ram setu", the psuedo-secularist will plunder on you, accuse you of anti development, call you religious fanatics who dont want india to grow. Bunk! just because a atheist who is more intrested in some lucrative business deal on set samundram project, the whole bunch of so called morally right ppls are playing with the religious sentiments of millions of hindu.
Every morning when i bow to lord vishu, i wonder why my religious believes are mocked then any other minority community here in india. Why i am made to believe that anything related to lord ram is a myth and whats real is a bloody barren structure where not a single prayer had been offered ever, thats indian so called secularism for us.

Progress doesn't lies in rejecting the faiths of common man but charting a way to meet all the aspirations. Blind materialism will take us no where, cant we see the kind of scars we have given to mother nature and now we are again bent to bestroy a holy structure which have acted as a natural defence to the mighty Tsunami.

Every one wants development, but with prosperity. There are alternative routs available to take on with that project: why to destroy the most ancient man made structure? jokers sitting in centre must realise that hindu sentiments are not for trade.

According to the specialists, a sea route may be prepared for navigation without damaging Sri Ram Setu, by removing the barren sand heaps near village Mandapam between Rameshwaram and Dhanushkoti railway. This will not only give a shorter route for navigation but also protect the oldest man-made heritage.

Now the question arises how old is ram setu? and when it was made?
In the words of Dr Radhasyam Brahmachari.

The Setusamudram Project has raised a nationwide debate about the origin and antiquity of the so called Ram-setu that connects India with Sri Lanka. On 3rd May, the debate took both houses of the Parliament by storm. Many believe that the antiquity of the Setu, as asserted by the scientists of National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), to be correct. By examining the pictures of the Setu taken from a satellite a few years ago, the NASA scientists came to the conclusion that (1) the Setu is man made and (2) it is 1.75 million years old. They arrived at the first conclusion from the fact that it was not possible for the large chunks of stones, with which the Setu is built, to have been placed in position by any natural process. Most of the people of this country are convinced that the said Ram-setu was built by Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, with the help of Sugriba, the king of Kiskindhya, and his people, in Treta Yuga of Indian time reckoning.

According to the Hindu system of time reckoning, 432,000 years make one Kaliyuga, 864,000 years make one Dvaparayuga, 1,296,000 years make one Tretayuga and 1,728,000 years make one Kritayuga (or Satyayuga). Adding up these four yugas one gets a Mahayuga of 4,320,000 years, which is ten times as big as one Kaliyuga. Furthermore, 71 Mashayugas and a Satyayuga make one Manvantara of 308,448,000 years and 14 Manvantaras and one Satyayuga make one Kalpa of 4,320,000,000 years or 4.32 billion years. At present, we are passing through the Svetavaraha Kalpa, that began about 1.97 billion years ago. After the beginning of the Svetavaraha Kalpa, 6 Manvantaras have gone and the 7th Vaivasvat Manvantara is in currency. And out of the 71 Mahayugas of the Vaivasvat Manvantara, 27 Mahayugas have gone and 28th Mahayuga is in currency. Finally, out of the said 28th Mahayuga, the Satyayuga, the Tretayuga and the Dvaparayuga have gone and the Kaliyuga is in currency and out of the present Kaliyuga, 5108 years have gone and the 5109th year has commenced on 20th March, this year (or 2007 AD). So if we take that Lord Rama was born in the Tretayuga, or more precisely in the juncture of Tretayuga and Dvaparayuga of the current 28th Mahayuga then one obtains that Lord Rama took birth nearly 864,000 + 5108 = 869,108 years ago. So, 1.75 million years, the antiquity of the Setu, as estimated by the NASA scientists, undoubtedly falls within the 28th Tretayuga.

But according to our scriptures, Lord Rama appeared on earth in the Tretayuga of, not the 28th but, the 24th Mahayuga. Our scriptures also say that Lord Vishnu has already taken nine Incarnations (Avataras) in the the present Vaivasvat Manvantara and He is yet to take another Incarnation in the present Kaliyuga. The table-1 presents a detail account of these Incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Sl no.
Avatara
Yuga
Day (Lunar)
Time
Place

1.
Matsya
1st Satya
3rd day of bright halh of Chaitra
Afternoon
Kritamaltat

2.
Kurma
1st Satya
5th day of bright half of Vaishakha
Dusk
Ocean

3.
Varaha
1st Satya
5th day of bright half of Bhadrapada
Afternoon
Haridwar

4.
Nrisingha
1st Satya
14th day of bright half of Vaishakha
Dusk
Mulasthana

5.
Vamana
7th Treta
12th day of bright half of Bhadrapada
Afternoon
Prayaga

6.
Parashurama
19th Treta
3rd day of bright half of Vaishakha
Afternoon
Jamadagnipura

7.
Rama
24th Treta
9th day of bright half of Chaitra
Noon
Ayodhya

8.
Krishna
28th Dvapara
8th day of dark half of Bhadrapada
Mid-night
Mathura

9.
Buddha
28th Kali
Full-moon day of Vaishakha

Lumbini

10.
Kalki
28th Kali
3rd day of bright half of Bhadrapada
Dusk
Sambhala

So according to our scriptures, Lord Rama appeared on earth as an Avatara of Lord Vishnu about 18,149,108 years or 1 crore 81 lakh 49 thousand and 108 years ago. And hence the antiquity of the Ram-setu is also of the same number of years.

To conclude, a few words may be said regarding the present controversy over the Ram-setu. In 2001, the Indian History Congress was holding its annual conference in the Alipur Campus of the University of Calcutta. At the concluding session of the said conference, the Nobel Laureate economist Sri Amartya Sen, while addressing the delegates, said, “Ramayana and Mahabharata have no historical value. These two are epics and hence nothing but poet’s fancy”. He also said, “Neither Rama nor Krishna were historical personalities, they are simply mythical”. One should not take the above words simply the sayings of Sri Amartya sen alone, but these are the conclusions of the Marxian as well as Macaulayan historians and intellectuals of this unfortunate country. And the other misfortune of this country is that even after 60 years of obtaining freedom, these people, who have little respect for the ancient cultural heritage of this country and respect for their fore-fathers, are dominating its political and intellectual spheres.

Another example may be presented here to expose their disrespect to the ancient history of this country. Nearly a decade ago the world renowned archaeologist Sri S R Rao has discovered the ancient city of Dwaraka under the Arabian sea. According to a press report appeared in the 17th March edition of the leading daily Times of India, the city of Dwaraka, discovered by Sri Rao, is again getting buried under the sands of the Arabian sea due to utter neglect of the present un-patriotic ruling community and its government.

In this country, Muslims wants that there should be no Ram, no Krishna; and people should adore Allah and his prophet Muhammad alone. Kashi, Mathurs, Haridwar or Vrindavan would no longer be holy places and people would go to Mecca and Medina on pilgrimage. The water of Ganga would no longer remain holy to them, but the water of Zem Zem, the well of Mecca. The Marxists, on the other hand, want to banish Ram, Krishna, Vashistha and Viswamitra from this country. The people of this country would worship only Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin. The Christians want that all the temples of this country should be converted into churches and Jesus Christ and Mother Mary should replace all the deities of the pagan Hindus. The Italian lady, who is now running the un-patriotic UPA Government of Delhi on proxy, with Muslims and Marxists as her two legs, has already started to proceed to turn her sinister plan into a reality, by inserting the sign of cross on the two rupee coin.

So the patriotic people of this country should come forward and raise their voice to compel the government to take immediate steps to preserve the ancient relics linked to great national heroes like Lord Sri Ram and Lord Sri Krishna. They must frustrate the evil design of the present antinational government to turn this nation into a Christian or into an Islamic state. This ancient nation of must continue to remain a Hindu nation, a nation of Ganga, Gita, Gayatri and Govinda.

Get out! christian missionaries

I am posting this article from Francois Gautier on the day when the archbishop of india said that "hindu nationalism" is a cancer in india. The hypocrisy in this statement is that those very ppls who are hell bent to make india a christian state are calling true nationalism a curse.Christian missionaries in india are using all possible activities to convert poor indian triblemen.

WILL HINDUISM SURVIVE THE PRESENT CHRISTIAN OFFENSIVE?
By Francois Gautier

When Prime Minister Vajpayee was in the US in September (2000) , the National Association of Asian Christians in the US (whom nobody had heard about before), paid $ 50,000 to the New York Times to publish "an Open Letter to the Honorable Atal Bihari Vajpayee, prime minister of India."

While "warmly welcoming the PM," The NAAC expressed deep concern about the "persecution" of Christians in India by "extremist" (meaning Hindu) groups mentioning as examples "the priest, missionaries and church workers who have been murdered," the nuns "raped," and the potential enacting of conversion laws, which would make "genuine" conversions illegal. The letter concluded by saying "that Christians in India today live in fear."

The whole affair was an embarrassment (as it was intended to be) to Mr. Vajpayee and the Indian delegation, which had come to prod American businessmen to invest in India, a peaceful, pro-Western and democratic country.

I am born a Christian and I have had a strong Catholic education. I do believe that Christ was an incarnation of Pure Love and that His Presence still radiates in the world. I also believe there are human beings who sincerely try to incarnate the ideals of Jesus and that you can find today in India a few missionaries (such as Father Ceyrac, a French Jesuit, who works mostly with lepers in Tamil Nadu) who are incarnations of that Love, tending tirelessly to people, without trying to convert them.

But I have also lived for more than 30 years in India, I am married to an Indian, I have travelled the length and breadth of this country and I have evolved a love and an understanding of India, which few other foreign correspondents have because they are never posted long enough to start getting a real feeling of this vast and often baffling country (nobody can claim to fully understand India). And this is what I have to say about the "persecution" of Christians in India.

Firstly, it is necessary to bring about a little bit of a historical flashback, which very few foreign correspondents (and unfortunately also Indian journalists) care to do, which would make for a more balanced view of the problem.

If ever there was persecution, it was of the Hindus at the hands of Christians, who were actually welcomed in this country, as they have been welcomed in no other place on this planet. Indeed, the first Christian community of the world, that of the Syrian Christians, was established in Kerala in the first century. They were able to live in peace and practice their religion freely, even imbibing some of the local Hindu customs, thereby breaking the Syrian Church in two.

When Vasco de Gama landed in Kerala in 1498, he was generously received by the Zamorin, the Hindu king of Calicut, who granted him the right to establish warehouses for commerce. But once again, Hindu tolerance was exploited and the Portuguese wanted more and more. In 1510, Alfonso de Albuquerque seized Goa, where he started a reign of terror, burning "heretics," crucifying Brahmins, using false theories to forcibly convert the lower castes, razing temples to build churches upon them and encouraging his soldiers to take Indian mistresses.

Indeed, the Portuguese perpetrated here some of the worst atrocities ever committed in Asia by Christianity upon another religion. Ultimately, the Portuguese had to be kicked out of India, when all other colonisers had already left.

British missionaries in India were always supporters of colonialism. They encouraged it and their whole structure was based on "the good Western civilized world being brought to the Pagans." Because, in the words of Claudius Buchanan, a chaplain attached to the East India Company, "Neither truth, nor honesty, honour, gratitude, nor charity, is to be found in the breast of a Hindoo!" What a comment about a nation that gave the world the Vedas at a time when Europeans were still grappling in their caves!

And it is in this way that the British allowed entire chunks of territories in the East, where lived tribals, whose poverty and simplicity made them easy prey to be converted to Christianity. By doing so, the Christian missionaries cut a people from their roots and tradition, made them look westwards towards a culture and a way of life which was not theirs.

And the result is there today for everyone to see: it is in these eastern states, some of which are 90 per cent Christian, that one finds the biggest drug problems (and crime) in India. It should also be said that many of the eastern separatist movements have been covertly encouraged by Christian missionaries on the ground that "tribals were there before the 'Aryan Hindus' invaded India and imposed Hinduism upon them."

The trouble is that the latest archaeological and linguistic discoveries point to the fact that there NEVER was an Aryan invasion of India --it just was an invention of the British and the missionaries to serve their purpose. Aryanism is a synonym of Vedic culture.

Secondly, Christianity has always striven on the myth of persecution, which in turn bred "martyrs" and saints, indispensable to the propagation of Christianity. But it is little known, for instance, that the first "saints" of Christianity, "martyred" in Rome, a highly refined civilization which had evolved a remarkable system of gods and goddesses, derived from Hindu mythology via the Greeks, were actually killed (a normal practice in those days) while bullying peaceful Romans to embrace the "true" religion, in the same way that later Christian missionaries will browbeat "heathen" Hindus, adoring many gods into believing that Jesus was the only "true" god.

Now to come to the recent cases of persecution of Christians in India at the hands of Hindu groups. I have personally investigated quite a few, amongst them the rape of the four nuns in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, nearly two years ago. This rape is still quoted as an example of the "atrocities" committed by Hindus on Christians.

Yet, when I interviewed the four innocent nuns, they themselves admitted, along with George Anatil, the bishop of Indore, that it had nothing to do with religion: It was the doing of a gang of Bhil tribals, known to perpetrate this kind of hateful acts on their own women. Today, the Indian press, the Christian hierarchy and the politicians, continue to include the Jhabua rape in the list of atrocities against Christians.

Or take the burning of churches in Andhra Pradesh a few months ago, which was supposed to have been committed by the "fanatic" RSS. It was proved later that it was actually the handiwork of Indian Muslims, at the behest of the ISI to foment hatred between Christians and Hindus. Yet the Indian press, which went berserk at the time of the burnings, mostly kept quiet when the true nature of the perpetrators was revealed.

Finally, even if Dara Singh does belong to the Bajrang Dal, it is doubtful if the hundred other accused do. What is more probable, is that like in many other "backward" places, it is a case of converted tribals versus non-converted tribals, of pent-up jealousies, of old village-feuds and land disputes. It is also an outcome of what -- it should be said -- are the aggressive methods of the Pentecost and Seventh Day Adventist missionaries, known for their muscular ways of conversion.

Thirdly, conversions in India by Christian missionaries of low caste Hindus and tribals are sometimes nothing short of fraudulent and shameful acts. American missionaries are investing huge amounts of money in India, which come from donation-drives in the United States where gullible Americans think the dollars they are giving go towards uplifting "poor and uneducated" Indians.

It is common in Kerala, for instance, particularly in the poor coastal districts, to have "miracle boxes" put in local churches. The gullible villager writes out a paper mentioning his wish such as a fishing boat, a loan for a pucca house, fees for the son's schooling. And lo, a few weeks later the miracle happens! And of course the whole family converts, making others in the village follow suit.

American missionaries (and their government) would like us to believe that democracy includes the freedom to convert by any means. But France for example, a traditionally Christian country, has a minister who is in charge of hunting down "sects." And by sects, it is meant anything that does not fall within the recognized family of Christianity -- even the Church of Scientology, favoured by some Hollywood stars such as Tom Cruise or John Travolta, is ruthlessly hounded. And look at what the Americans did to the Osho movement in Arizona, or how innocent children and women were burnt down by the FBI (with the assistance of the US army) at Waco, Texas, because they belonged to a dangerous sect.

Did you know that Christianity is dying in the West? Not only is church attendance falling dramatically because spirituality has deserted it, but less and less youth accept the vocation to become priests or nuns. And as a result, say in the rural parts of France, you will find only one priest for six or seven villages, whereas till the late seventies, the smallest hamlet had its own parish priest.

And where is Christianity finding new priests today? In the Third World, of course! And India, because of the innate impulsion of its people towards god, is a very fertile recruiting ground for the Church, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Hence the huge attention that India is getting from the United States, Australia, or England and the massive conversion drive going on today.

It is sad that Indians, once converted, specially the priests and nuns, tend to turn against their own country and help in the conversion drive. There are very few "White" missionaries left in India and most of the conversions are done today by Indian priests.

Last month, during the bishop's conference in Bangalore, it was restated by bishops and priests from all over India that conversion is the FIRST priority of the Church here. But are the priests and bishops aware that they would never find in any Western country the same freedom to convert that they take for granted in India? Do they know that in China they would be expelled, if not put into jail? Do they realize that they have been honoured guests in this country for nearly two thousand years and that they are betraying those that gave them peace and freedom?

Hinduism, the religion of tolerance, and spirituality of this new millennium, has survived the unspeakable barbarism of wave after wave of Muslim invasions, the insidious onslaught of Western colonialism which has killed the spirit of so many Third World countries, and the soul-stifling assault of Nehruvianism. But will it survive the present Christian offensive?

Many Hindu religious leaders feel Christianity is a real threat today, as in numerous ways it is similar to Hinduism, from which Christ borrowed so many concepts. (See Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's book: "Hinduism and Christianity")

It is thus necessary that Indians themselves become more aware of the danger their culture and unique civilization is facing at the hands of missionaries sponsored by foreign money. It is also necessary that they stop listening to the Marxist-influenced English newspapers' defense of the right of Christian missionaries to convert innocent Hindus.

Conversion belongs to the times of colonialism. We have entered the era of Unity, of coming together, of tolerance and accepting each other as we are, not of converting in the name of one elusive "true" god.

When Christianity accepts the right of other people to follow their own beliefs and creeds, then only will Jesus Christ's spirit truly radiate in the world.

[The author, who writes "The Ferengi's Column" in The Indian Express, is the correspondent in South Asia for Le Figaro, France's largest circulating daily. Thus they try to convince that the Greek or Hellenic civilization is the fountainhead of today’s Occidental wisdom and people like Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Pythagoras etc. were the authors of their cultural heritage. In this way they try to project that the present Western civilization grew independently in Greece and hence it was not indebted to civilization of any other group of people.

But Sir William Jones, the founder of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta, put a big question mark on the above Western notion. Sir Jones was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in Calcutta by the East India Company and he therefore came to Calcutta in 1773. After day’s work, he started to learn Sanskrit in the evening and appointed Pundit Jagannath Tarkapanchanan to assist him as a private tutor. As soon as he entered the vast treasure of Sanskrit literature, Jones could discover many similarities between Sanskrit and the ancient European languages like Greek, Celtic, old German, old Saxon and so on. He could also notice that many Sanskrit words had entered Greek and Latin vocabulary without little alteration. He could detect that the English ‘mother’ has been derived gradually from ‘modar’ in old English and old Saxon, ‘moder’ in old German, ‘mathir’ in old Irish, ‘motre’ in old Albenian, ‘mair’ in old Armenian, ‘mater’ in Latin, ‘meter’ in Greek and ultimately from ‘matri’ in Sanskrit.

In a similar manner, today’s English word ‘father’ has been derived from ‘fader’ in old English, ‘faeder’ in old Saxon, ‘fater’ in old Armenian, ‘pater’ in Latin and Greek and ultimately from ‘pitri’ in Sanskrit. In a similar, ‘brother’ from Sanskrit ‘bhratri’; ‘vagina’ from Sanskrit ‘bhagni’; ignite, ignition etc. from Sanskrit ‘agni’; ‘night’ from Sanskrit ‘nakta’ and so on. A comprehensive list of such similarities is so vast that it given birth to a new branch of knowledge called Comparative Philology.

But vanity and European pride of Sir Jones prevented him to confess the truth that Sanskrit was the mother of all the European languages including his mother tongue English. So he had to invent a trick to save his face and said that all the European languages and Sanskrit had been derived from a still older language, which has now become obsolete. Thus he tried to establish a theory that the said older language is themother of Sanskrit and all the European languages of today and hence the Sanskrit and the European languages belong to a same group called Indo-European group of languages. To make his theory credible, he also said that a group of people, perhaps used to live in Asia-minor and speak in that language. This hint was later on utilized by Max Muller and according to him the said group of people were Aryans who finally scattered over a vast stretch of land and built up a civilization known as Arian civilization. And thus he laid the foundation stone of the so called Aryan Invasion Theory, which has now been rejected by most of the historians of the world.

So long India was under the domination of the British, they could successfully distort the thought process of the people of this country by introducing all these lies into school and college curricula. As a result, many of the so called educated Indian still believe that a group or race of people called Aryan, came from outside India nearly 2500 or 3000 B.C. and they occupied this country by defeating its sons of the soil, and at the same time, they destroyed the Harappan civilization of the Dravidians. But the discovery of the ancient River Saraswati has shattered all those fabricated stories of the Western scholars. World famous archaeologist Sir Laurelstein excavated nearly 1600 sites on the bank of the River Saraswati and conclusively proved that the Saraswati Civilization was a part of the vast Vedic Civilization and the civilization now known a the Mahenjo-daro or Harappan Civilization was simply a part of the Vedic Saraswati Civilization. Many has also been able to decipher the arappanHarappan scripts and succeeded to prove that it was nothing but an ancient version of Brahmi and the language of the text was Sanskrit.

So, it has become evident today that the said Aryan Invasion Theory was a fraud and had been invented by the European scholars and later on propagated by the colonial British rulers simply to subdue the people of this country and also to establish their illegal occupation of India on an ethical ground. It has also become evident today that the all the European languages, which, according to William Jones were the members of the so called Indo-European group of languages, had been derived from Sanskrit. Furthermore, scholars also agree that, migration deed take place, not to India but, from India to almost all over the world and these Indian immigrants carried Sanskrit with them. The also agree that the word Europe was derived from Sanskrit ‘surupa’ and these Indian immigrants were the authors of ancient civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Iran, Rome, Greece, North and South America and so on.

Every Indian should be proud to know that Parasya, the original name of Persia or Iran, was derived from Sanskrit ‘parasu’ the battle axe which Lord Parasu Ram, an Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, used to carry. He should also be glad to know that the great Roman Empire was the creation of immigrant ksatriyas of India, who settled in Italy and founded the city of Rome, named after Lord Rama, the king of ayodhya. One should also notice that in Italian it is spelled Roma, not Rome, still today. According to E. Pococke, originally the name of the city was Rama and later on, Sanskrit long ‘a’ was replaced by ‘o’. There is another city in Italy, Ravenna, which many believe, has been derived from Ravana, the king of Sri Lanka. Ancient Romans used to wear dhoti and cremate the dead. Still today one finds numerous statues of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha and the most spectacular statue of Lord Shiva is standind beside a public fountain at a road square in Bologna. Roman priests were called ‘Pontiffs’ and scholars believe that the word has been coined from Sanskrit ‘Pundit’. They are also convinced that the word ‘Vatican’ has been derived from Sanskrit ‘Vatika’.

Once upon a time, the two countries Norway and Sweden, collectively called Scandinavia, were ruled by Shri Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva. It is well known that, Skanda was the other name of Shri Kartikeya and the land was therefore called Skandanavi. And scholars agree that today’s Scandinavia is a corrupt of Sanskrit Skandanavi. Similarly, the Caspian Sea was named after Rishi Kasyapa and words like August, Augustine, Augustus etc. were derived from Rishi Agastya. Arka is the other name of the sun and Sanskrit arka became arak in the West, just as dharma became dharma and karma became karam in Northern India. Gradually this arak became araak and finally today’s Iraq. In a similar manner, Surya the sun became today’s Syria.

It would be really perplexing to every Indian to know that Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki, became Apollo in Greece. Radhakanta is the other name of Lord Krishna and, as Radha is a woman and abala (physically weak), He is also known as Abalakanta, and this Abala gradually became Apollo in Greece. Scholars also agree that the Greek god Zeus was no other than Lord Shiva of Kailash. They also agree that early Indian settlers in Greece came from Rajagriha of Magadha (today’s Rajgir in the state of Bihar). As they migrated from Rajagriha or simply ‘griha’, were called ‘Graihkas’ or ‘Graihakos’. Through passage of time, this ‘Graihako’ became ‘Graecus’ and finally ‘Greek’. In a similar manner, Sanskrit ‘griha’ became Greece.

As said above, the early Indian settlers were from Magadh, and people from Magadh were called Madadhan in Greece. After passage of time this ‘Magadhan’ became ‘Makedan’ or ‘Macedan’, and finally ‘Macedonia’, the birth place of Alexander. Where from the name Alexander had been derived? A man of incomparable beauty in this world is called ‘Alokasundar’ in Sanskrit and after passage of time, Sanskrit ‘Alokasundar’ became ‘Alexander’ in Greece. It may be mentioned here that there are many variations variuations in spelling of Alexander in Europe and a few of them are Alexandre, Aleksander, Aleksunder and so on, and these variations supports the above view.

Thousands of years ago people belonging to the tribe of Bhil left their dwelling place Hamman in Afghanistan and settled in Greece, where there chiefs were called Bhilpos, a corrupt of Bhilpati. Gradually this Bhilpos became Philips, the tribe to which Alexander belonged. So, it becomes evident that fore-fathers of Alexander originally were inhabitants of Hamman in Afghanistan, who later on migrated to Greece.

There is a small place called Attak lying on the bank River Indus and nearly 942 miles north of the Arabian Sea. These people, after migrating to Greece, named their new dwelling place as Attak-sthan, which after passage of time, gradually became Atakthan Or Atthan and finally Athens, the great ancient city of Greece. The migrants from Ayodhya were called Ayodhan (people of Ayodhya) in Greece. Later on, this Ayodhan became Ionan and from Ionan, names like Ionian Island, Ionian Sea were derived. These migrants from Ayodhya were also known as Cul-ait-Ram (Family of Ram), which ultimately became Call-id-Romos. Scholars believe that a group of these people, later on, migrated to Italy and founded the Roman Empire and the city of Roma. And another branch of them migrated to Peru in South America.

Shali is a kind of fine rice and desh-shali stands for the place where this kind of rice is cultivated. Such a place of desh-shali in Greece became Thessali, a province in Greece. Himadri is the other name of Himalay, where ‘him’ stands for cold and ‘adri’ stands for a mountain. And from this ‘adri’, the name of the sea between Greece and Italy was named the Adriatic Sea. Falguni or Phalgooni was the other name of Arjuna. This Phalgooni in Greece became Phalgoonus and the settlement of the descendants of Phalgoonus was called Phalgoonia. Today, the place is called Pelagonia, which forms a part of the province of Thessali. Another name of Arjuna was Ajeya or the undefeatable. In Greece, this Ajeya became Aegeus and his descendants were called Aigaios. And from Aegeus, the adjoining sea became Aegean Sea.

The early settlers in Greece were also known as Pelasgians and scholars believe that the word was derived from Pelargos. But pelargos has several meanings. Firstly, Pelargos means sea and hence some scholars beliueve that they were called Pelasgians as those early settlers came to Greece by the sea. Secondly, ‘pelo’ means ‘to till’ and ‘argos’ means ‘land’. So, many believe that those early settlers were tillers of the land, or agricultural people. A third group of scholars believe that those early settlers came from the state of Bihar in India. In those days, Bihar was also known as Pelas, and hence they were called Pelasgians.

Why did the Indians start migrating to Greece and other Western countries in large numbers? And when? Scholars believe that, after the Kurukshetra War the Kshatriya tribes, who fought for the Kauravas and survived the War, began to migrate in large numbers to escape humiliation and persecution by the winner Kshatriyas. According to the most modern estimate, the said War was fought in 3067 B.C., and hence the said migration took place nearly 5000 years ago.

Hella is the other name of Greece and many believe that the name was coined from the mountain Hela, situated in Baluchistan in today’s Pakistan. They also believe that the people of that locality were the first among all other Indian tribes to reach Greece. The contribution of these people from Hela mountain, who were sun worshippers, played a vital role in Greek history and civilization. From this Hela, the Greek name Helios for the sun was derived. The settlement of these Hela people was called Hela-des or land of Hela, which ultimately became today’s Helados.

There was a group of people who lived near the mouth of River Indus, who were experts in long distance sea voyage. These people worshipped snakes and hence were called ‘Phanish’ or king of snakes. Afater passage of time, they were called the Phoenicion sailors. In Greek, word ‘cori’ stands for the mouth of a river. So the people, who migrated from the mouth of Indus were called ‘cori-Indus’. Later on, this ‘cori-Indus’ became ‘Corinthus’ and their settlement became the city of Corinth.

Many believe that the name of the Caucasus mountain was derived from Kaikeyi, the mother of Prince Bharata, the younger brother of Lord Rama. Similarly the names like Christ, Christine, Christopher etc were derived from Krishna; Adamson, Adams etc. from Sanskrit ‘adim’ and Andrew, Andrews etc. from Sanskrit ‘Indra’. Scholars agree that English ‘man’ and old English ‘mon’ were derived from Sanskrit ‘Manu’. Scholars also believe that names like Harry, Harris, Harrison etc. were corrupts of Sanskrit Hari. The renowned German scholar Max Muller was fully convinced that, ‘Max’ was a corrupt of Sanskrit ‘moksha’ and whenever he wrote a letter in Sanskrit, he used to sign it as Moksha Muller. Furthermore, during his stay at Oxford, he used to write ‘Gotirtha Nagar, in stead of Oxford.

In Sanskrit, the word ‘kulish’ stands for lightening and Harikulish was the other name of Lord Balarama. In Greece, this ‘Harikulish’ became ‘Hercules’. Hara is the other name of Lord Shiva and, in Greece, this ‘Hara’ became ‘Haro’. Scholars also believe that the English words ‘hero’, ‘hurrah’ etc were derived from Sanskrit ‘Hara’. The English word ‘amazon’ stands for a woman warrior, or more commonly for a tall, strong and masculine woman. Scholars agree that the word was derived from ‘Uma’, the wife of Lord Shiva. In Sanskrit, ‘Umasuta’ means son of Uma. In Greece, this ‘Umasuta’ became ‘Umasuna’ or ‘Umasun’ or ‘Umasoon’ and hence ‘Umasoona’ stood for Uma’s daughter. With passage of time, ‘Umasoona’ became ‘Umazoona’ or ‘Umazona’, and ultimately “Amazon’.

In Sanskrit, ‘ap’ means water. In many places, including Northern India and Arabia, this ‘ap’ became ‘ab’, and thus the land of pancha (five) ‘ab’ became Punjab. In a similar manner, the sacred water of the well Zem Zem in Mecca became ‘ab-e- Zem Zem. Scholars believe that the name of the Russian River Ob is also a corrupt of Sanskrit ‘ap’. They also believe that the name of the River Volga was derived from Sanskrit ‘falgu’. They are also convinced that the name of the River Danube was derived from Sanskrit ‘dhanya (paddy)+ ob’ and hence it implies that once upon a time, paddy was cultivated on the banks of the River Danube. In Sanskrit, ‘dhara’ means flow and ‘am’ means mighty and the name of the River Amu Darya is a corrupt of Sanskrit ‘am + dhara’ and similarly, the name of the River Syr Darya is a corrupt of Sanskrit ‘Sri + dhara’. Scholars also agree that the name of the River Nera in Yugoslavia was derived from Sanskrit ‘neera’ (water); River Odra in Poland from Sanskrit ‘ardra’ (wet); the Siberian river Uda from Sanskrit ‘udaka’ (water) and the river Vah in Czechoslovakia from Sanskrit ‘vah’ (to flow).

Most of the scholars agree that the Greek epics Iliad and Odyssey are nothing but imitations of Ramayana. The prime story of Ramayana is abduction of Sita by Ravana and liberating her from captivity by Rama. Similarly the Greek epics narrate abduction and liberation of Helen, the Queen of Troy.

How were the names of the celebrated Hellenic scholars derived? Scholars believe that Sanskrit ‘arya’ became ‘aristo’ in Greece and from this ‘aristo’ names like Aristotle, Aristarchus and English words like aristocrat, aristocracy etc have been derived. They also believe that Socrates was a corrupt of ‘Sukracharya’ or ‘Sukra’. In Sanskrit, ‘vidyapith’ means a place of learning and ‘vidyapith guru’ stands for a teacher or ‘acharya’. In Greece, this ‘vidyapith guru’ became simply ‘pith guru’, which after passage of time, became ‘pithgoras’ and from this ‘pithgoras’, finally the English word Pythagoras was derived.

So, it becomes evident that the scholars who believed to have authored the Greek or Hellenic civilization, were, in fact, Kshatriya immigrants from India. And hence it can safely be said that, India is the mother of civilization, which is now known as Hellenic or Greek civilization. Or in broader sense, India is the mother of today’s Western civilization.

For Further Reading:

1. According to this account, India was invaded and conquered by nomadic light-skinned Indo-European tribes from Central Asia around 1500-100 BC, who overthrew an earlier and more advanced dark-skinned Dravidian civilization from which they took most of what later became Hindu culture. This so-called pre-Aryan civilization is said to be evidenced by the large urban ruins of what has been called the "Indus valley culture" (as most of its initial sites were on the Indus river). The war between the powers of light and darkness, a prevalent idea in ancient Aryan Vedic scriptures, was thus interpreted to refer to this war between light and dark skinned peoples. The Aryan invasion theory thus turned the "Vedas", the original scriptures of ancient India and the Indo-Aryans, into little more than primitive poems of uncivilized plunderers.

This idea totally foreign to the history of India, whether north or south has become almost an unquestioned truth in the interpretation of ancient history Today, after nearly all the reasons for its supposed validity have been refuted, even major Western scholars are at last beginning to call it in question.

In this article we will summarize the main points that have arisen. This is a complex subject that I have dealt with in depth in my book "Gods, Sages and Kings: Vedic Secrets of Ancient Civilization", for those interested in further examination of the subject.

The Indus valley culture was pronounced pre-Aryans for several reasons that were largely part of the cultural milieu of nineteenth century European thinking As scholars following Max Mullar had decided that the Aryans came into India around 1500 BC, since the Indus valley culture was earlier than this, they concluded that it had to be preAryan. Yet the rationale behind the late date for the Vedic culture given by Muller was totally speculative. Max Muller, like many of the Christian scholars of his era, believed in Biblical chronology. This placed the beginning of the world at 400 BC and the flood around 2500 BC. Assuming to those two dates, it became difficult to get the Aryans in India before 1500 BC.

Muller therefore assumed that the five layers of the four 'Vedas' & 'Upanishads' were each composed in 200 year periods before the Buddha at 500 BC. However, there are more changes of language in Vedic Sanskrit itself than there are in classical Sanskrit since Panini, also regarded as a figure of around 500 BC, or a period of 2500 years. Hence it is clear that each of these periods could have existed for any number of centuries and that the 200 year figure is totally arbitrary and is likely too short a figure.

It was assumed by these scholars many of whom were also Christian missionaries unsympathetic to the 'Vedas' that the Vedic culture was that of primitive nomads from Central Asia. Hence they could not have founded any urban culture like that of the Indus valley. The only basis for this was a rather questionable interpretation of the 'Rig Veda' that they made, ignoring the sophisticated nature of the culture presented within it.

Meanwhile, it was also pointed out that in the middle of the second millennium BC, a number of Indo-European invasions apparently occured in the Middle East, wherein Indo-European peoples the Hittites, Mit tani and Kassites conquered and ruled Mesopotamia for some centuries. An Aryan invasion of India would have been another version of this same movement of Indo-European peoples. On top of this, excavators of the Indus valley culture, like Wheeler, thought they found evidence of destruction of the culture by an outside invasion confirming this.

The Vedic culture was thus said to be that of primitive nomads who came out of Central Asia with their horse-drawn chariots and iron weapons and overthrew the cities of the more advanced Indus valley culture, with their superior battle tactics. It was pointed out that no horses, chariots or iron was discovered in Indus valley sites.

This was how the Aryan invasion theory formed and has remained since then. Though little has been discovered that confirms this theory, there has been much hesitancy to question it, much less to give it up.

Further excavations discovered horses not only in Indus Valley sites but also in pre-Indus sites. The use of the horse has thus been proven for the whole range of ancient Indian history. Evidence of the wheel, and an Indus seal showing a spoked wheel as used in chariots, has also been found, suggesting the usage of chariots.

Moreover, the whole idea of nomads with chariots has been challenged. Chariots are not the vehicles of nomads. Their usage occured only in ancient urban cultures with much flat land, of which the river plain of north India was the most suitable. Chariots are totally unsuitable for crossing mountains and deserts, as the so-called Aryan invasion required.

That the Vedic culture used iron & must hence date later than the introduction of iron around 1500 BC revolves around the meaning of the Vedic term "ayas", interpreted as iron. 'Ayas' in other Indo- European languages like Latin or German usually means copper, bronze or ore generally, not specially iron. There is no reason to insist that in such earlier Vedic times, 'ayas' meant iron, particularly since other metals are not mentioned in the 'Rig Veda' (except gold that is much more commonly referred to than ayas). Moreover, the 'Atharva Veda' and 'Yajur Veda' speak of different colors of 'ayas'(such as red & black), showing that it was a generic term. Hence it is clear that 'ayas' generally meant metal and not specifically iron.

Moreover, the enemies of the Vedic people in the 'Rig Veda' also use ayas, even for making their cities, as do the Vedic people themselves. Hence there is nothing in Vedic literture to show that either the Vedic culture was an ironbased culture or that there enemies were not.

The 'Rig Veda' describes its Gods as 'destroyers of cities'. This was used also to regard the Vedic as a primitive non-urban culture that destroys cities and urban civilization. However, there are also many verses in the 'Rig Veda' that speak of the Aryans as having having cities of their own and being protected by cities upto a hundred in number. Aryan Gods like Indra, Agni, Saraswati and the Adityas are praised as being like a city. Many ancient kings, including those of Egypt and Mesopotamia, had titles like destroyer or conquerer of cities. This does not turn them into nomads. Destruction of cities also happens in modern wars; this does not make those who do this nomads. Hence the idea of Vedic culture as destroying but not building the cities is based upon ignoring what the Vedas actually say about their own cities.

Further excavation revealed that the Indus Valley culture was not des- troyed by outside invasion, but according to internal causes and, most likely, floods. Most recently a new set of cities has been found in India (like the Dwaraka and Bet Dwaraka sites by S.R. Rao and the National Institute of Oceanography in India) which are intermidiate between those of the Indus culture and later ancient India as visited by the Greeks. This may eliminate the so-called dark age following the presumed Aryan invasion and shows a continuous urban occupation in India back to the beginning of the Indus culture.

The interpretation of the religion of the Indus Valley culture -made incidentlly by scholars such as Wheeler who were not religious scholars much less students of Hinduism was that its religion was different than the Vedic and more likely the later Shaivite religion. However, further excavations both in Indus Valley site in Gujarat, like Lothal, and those in Rajsthan, like Kalibangan show large number of fire altars like those used in the Vedic religion, along with bones of oxen, potsherds, shell jewelry and other items used in the rituals described in the 'Vedic Brahmanas'. Hence the Indus Valley culture evidences many Vedic practices that can not be merely coincidental. That some of its practices appeared non-Vedic to its excavators may also be attributed to their misunderstanding or lack of knowledge of Vedic and Hindu culture generally, wherein Vedism and Shaivism are the same basic tradition.

We must remember that ruins do not necessarily have one interpretation. Nor does the ability to discover ruins necessarily gives the ability to interpret them correctly.

The Vedic people were thought to have been a fair-skinned race like the Europeans owing to the Vedic idea of a war between light and darkness, and the Vedic people being presented as children of light or children of the sun. Yet this idea of a war between light and darkness exists in most ancient cultures, including the Persian and the Egyptian. Why don't we interpret their scriptures as a war between light and dark-skinned people? It is purely a poetic metaphor, not a cultural statement. Moreover, no real traces of such a race are found in India.

Anthropologists have observed that the present population of Gujarat is composed of more or less the same ethnic groups as are noticed at Lothal in 2000 BC. Similarly, the present population of the Punjab is said to be ethnically the same as the population of Harappa and Rupar 4000 years ago. Linguistically the present day population of Gujrat and Punjab belongs to the Indo-Aryan language speaking group. The only inference that can be drawn from the anthropological and linguistic evidences adduced above is that the Harappan population in the Indus Valley and Gujrat in 2000 BC was composed of two or more groups, the more dominent among them having very close ethnic affinities with the present day Indo-Aryan speaking population of India.

In other words there is no racial evidence of any such Indo-Aryan invasion of India but only of a continuity of the same group of people who traditionally considered themselves to be Aryans.

There are many points in fact that prove the Vedic nature of the Indus Valley culture. Further excavation has shown that the great majority of the sites of the Indus Valley culture were east, not west of Indus. In fact, the largest concentration of sites appears in an area of Punjab and Rajsthan near the dry banks of ancient Saraswati and Drishadvati rivers. The Vedic culture was said to have been founded by the sage Manu between the banks of Saraswati and Drishadvati rivers. The Saraswati is lauded as the main river (naditama) in the 'Rig Veda' & is the most frequently mentioned in the text. It is said to be a great flood and to be wide, even endless in size. Saraswati is said to be "pure in course from the mountains to the sea". Hence the Vedic people were well acquainted with this river and regarded it as their immemorial hoemland.

The Saraswati, as modern land studies now reveal, was indeed one of the largest, if not the largest river in India. In early ancient and pre-historic times, it once drained the Sutlej, Yamuna and the Ganges, whose courses were much different than they are today. However, the Saraswati river went dry at the end of the Indus Valley culture and before the so-called Aryan invasion or before 1500 BC. In fact this may have caused the ending of the Indus culture. How could the Vedic Aryans know of this river and establish their culture on its banks if it dried up before they arrived? Indeed the Saraswati as described in the 'Rig Veda' appears to more accurately show it as it was prior to the Indus Valley culture as in the Indus era it was already in decline.

Vedic and late Vedic texts also contain interesting astronomical lore. The Vedic calender was based upon astronomical sightings of the equinoxes and solstices. Such texts as 'Vedanga Jyotish' speak of a time when the vernal equinox was in the middle of the Nakshtra Aslesha (or about 23 degrees 20 minutes Cancer). This gives a date of 1300 BC. The 'Yajur Veda' and 'Atharva Veda' speak of the vernal equinox in the Krittikas (Pleiades; early Taurus) and the summer solstice (ayana) in Magha (early Leo). This gives a date about 2400 BC. Yet earlier eras are mentioned but these two have numerous references to substantiate them. They prove that the Vedic culture existed at these periods and already had a sophisticated system of astronomy. Such references were merely ignored or pronounced unintelligible by Western scholars because they yielded too early a date for the 'Vedas' than what they presumed, not because such references did not exist.

Vedic texts like 'Shatapatha Brahmana' and 'Aitereya Brahmana' that mention these astronomical references list a group of 11 Vedic Kings, including a number of figures of the 'Rig Veda', said to have conquered the region of India from 'sea to sea'. Lands of the Aryans are mentioned in them from Gandhara (Afganistan) in the west to Videha (Nepal) in the east, and south to Vidarbha (Maharashtra). Hence the Vedic people were in these regions by the Krittika equinox or before 2400 BC. These passages were also ignored by Western scholars and it was said by them that the 'Vedas' had no evidence of large empires in India in Vedic times. Hence a pattern of ignoring literary evidence or misinterpreting them to suit the Aryan invasion idea became prevalent, even to the point of changing the meaning of Vedic words to suit this theory.

According to this theory, the Vedic people were nomads in the Punjab, comming down from Central Asia. However, the 'Rig Veda' itself has nearly 100 references to ocean (samudra), as well as dozens of references to ships, and to rivers flowing in to the sea. Vedic ancestors like Manu, Turvasha, Yadu and Bhujyu are flood figures, saved from across the sea. The Vedic God of the sea, Varuna, is the father of many Vedic seers and seer families like Vasishta, Agastya and the Bhrigu seers. To preserve the Aryan invasion idea it was assumed that the Vedic (and later sanskrit) term for ocean, samudra, originally did not mean the ocean but any large body of water, especially the Indus river in Punjab. Here the clear meaning of a term in 'Rig Veda' and later times verified by rivers like Saraswati mentioned by name as flowing into the sea was altered to make the Aryan invasion theory fit. Yet if we look at the index to translation of the 'Rig Veda' by Griffith for example, who held to this idea that samudra didn't really mean the ocean, we find over 70 references to ocean or sea. If samudra does noe mean ocean why was it traslated as such? It is therefore without basis to locate Vedic kings in Central Asia far from any ocean or from the massive Saraswati river, which form the background of their land and the symbolism of their hymns.

One of the latest archeological ideas is that the Vedic culture is evidenced by Painted Grey Ware pottery in north India, which apears to date around 1000 BC and comes from the same region between the Ganges and Yamuna as later Vedic culture is related to. It is thought to be an inferior grade of pottery and to be associated with the use of iron that the 'Vedas' are thought to mention. However it is associated with a pig and rice culture, not the cow and barley culture of the 'Vedas'. Moreover it is now found to be an organic development of indegenous pottery, not an introduction of invaders.

Painted Grey Ware culture represents an indigenous cultural development and does not reflect any cultural intrusion from the West i.e. an Indo-Aryan invasion. Therefore, there is no archeological evidence corroborating the fact of an Indo-Aryan invasion.

In addition, the Aryans in the Middle East, most notably the Hittites, have now been found to have been in that region atleast as early as 2200 BC, wherein they are already mentioned. Hence the idea of an Aryan invasion into the Middle East has been pushed back some centuries, though the evidence so far is that the people of the mountain regions of the Middle East were Indo-Europeans as far as recorded history can prove.

The Aryan Kassites of the ancient Middle East worshipped Vedic Gods like Surya and the Maruts, as well as one named Himalaya. The Aryan Hittites and Mittani signed a treaty with the name of the Vedic Gods Indra, Mitra, Varuna and Nasatyas around 1400 BC. The Hittites have a treatise on chariot racing written in almost pure Sanskrit. The IndoEuropeans of the ancient Middle East thus spoke Indo-Aryan, not Indo-Iranian languages and thereby show a Vedic culture in that region of the world as well.

The Indus Valley culture had a form of writing, as evidenced by numerous seals found in the ruins. It was also assumed to be non-Vedic and probably Dravidian, though this was never proved. Now it has been shown that the majority of the late Indus signs are identical with those of later Hindu Brahmi and that there is an organic development between the two scripts. Prevalent models now suggest an Indo-European base for that language.

It was also assumed that the Indus Valley culture derived its civilization from the Middle East, probably Sumeria, as antecedents for it were not found in India. Recent French excavations at Mehrgarh have shown that all the antecedents of the Indus Valley culture can be found within the subcontinent and going back before 6000 BC.

In short, some Western scholars are beginning to reject the Aryan invasion or any outside origin for Hindu civilization.

Current archeological data do not support the existence of an Indo Aryan or European invasion into South Asia at any time in the preor protohistoric periods. Instead, it is possible to document archeologically a series of cultural changes reflecting indigenous cultural development from prehistoric to historic periods. The early Vedic literature describes not a human invasion into the area, but a fundamental restructuring of indigenous society. The Indo-Aryan invasion as an academic concept in 18th and 19th century Europe reflected the cultural milieu of the period. Linguistic data were used to validate the concept that in turn was used to interpret archeological and anthropological data.

In other words, Vedic literature was interpreted on the assumption that there was an Aryan invasion. Then archeological evidence was interpreted by the same assumption. And both interpretations were then used to justify each other. It is nothing but a tautology, an exercise in circular thinking that only proves that if assuming something is true, it is found to be true!

Another modern Western scholar, Colin Renfrew, places the IndoEuropeans in Greece as early as 6000 BC. He also suggests such a possible early date for their entry into India.

As far as I can see there is nothing in the Hymns of the 'Rig Veda' which demonstrates that the Vedic-speaking population was intrusive to the area: this comes rather from a historical assumption of the 'comming of the Indo-Europeans.

When Wheeler speaks of 'the Aryan invasion of the land of the 7 rivers, the Punjab', he has no warrenty at all, so far as I can see. If one checks the dozen references in the 'Rig Veda' to the 7 rivers, there is nothing in them that to me implies invasion: the land of the 7 rivers is the land of the 'Rig Veda', the scene of action. Nor is it implied that the inhabitants of the walled cities (including the Dasyus) were any more aboriginal than the Aryans themselves.

Despite Wheeler's comments, it is difficult to see what is particularly non-Aryan about the Indus Valley civilization. Hence Renfrew suggests that the Indus Valley civilization was in fact Indo-Aryan even prior to the Indus Valley era:

This hypothesis that early Indo-European languages were spoken in North India with Pakistan and on the Iranian plateau at the 6th millennium BC has the merit of harmonizing symmetrically with the theory for the origin of the IndoEuropean languages in Europe. It also emphasizes the continuity in the Indus Valley and adjacent areas from the early neolithic through to the floruit of the Indus Valley civilization.

This is not to say that such scholars appreciate or understand the 'Vedas' their work leaves much to be desired in this respect but that it is clear that the whole edifice built around the Aryan invasion is beginning to tumble on all sides. In addition, it does not mean that the 'Rig Veda' dates from the Indus Valley era. The Indus Valley culture resembles that of the 'Yajur Veda' and the reflect the pre-Indus period in India, when the Saraswati river was more prominent.

The acceptance of such views would create a revolution in our view of history as shattering as that in science caused by Einstein's theory of relativity. It would make ancient India perhaps the oldest, largest and most central of ancient cultures. It would mean that the Vedic literary record already the largest and oldest of the ancient world even at a 1500 BC date would be the record of teachings some centuries or thousands of years before that. It would mean that the 'Vedas' are our most authentic record of the ancient world. It would also tend to validate the Vedic view that the Indo-Europeans and other Aryan peoples were migrants from India, not that the Indo-Aryans were invaders into India. Moreover, it would affirm the Hindu tradition that the Dravidians were early offshoots of the Vedic people through the seer Agastya, and not unaryan peoples.

In closing, it is important to examine the social and political implications of the Aryan invasion idea:

First, it served to divide India into a northern Aryan and southern Dravidian culture which were made hostile to each other. This kept the Hindus divided and is still a source of social tension.

Second, it gave the British an excuse in their conquest of India. They could claim to be doing only what the Aryan ancestors of the Hindus had previously done millennia ago.

Third, it served to make Vedic culture later than and possibly derived from Middle Eastern cultures. With the proximity and relationship of the latter with the Bible and Christianity, this kept the Hindu religion as a sidelight to the development of religion and civilization to the West.

Fourth, it allowed the sciences of India to be given a Greek basis, as any Vedic basis was largely disqualified by the primitive nature of the Vedic culture.

This discredited not only the 'Vedas' but the genealogies of the 'Puranas' and their long list of the kings before the Buddha or Krishna were left without any historical basis. The 'Mahabharata', instead of a civil war in which all the main kings of India participated as it is described, became a local skirmish among petty princes that was later exaggerated by poets. In short, it discredited the most of the Hindu tradition and almost all its ancient literature. It turned its scriptures and sages into fantacies and exaggerations.

This served a social, political and economical purpose of domination, proving the superiority of Western culture and religion. It made the Hindus feel that their culture was not the great thing that their sages and ancestors had said it was. It made Hindus feel ashamed of their culture that its basis was neither historical nor scientific. It made them feel that the main line of civilization was developed first in the Middle East and then in Europe and that the culture of India was peripheral and secondary to the real development of world culture.

Such a view is not good scholarship or archeology but merely cultural imperialism. The Western Vedic scholars did in the intellectual spehere what the British army did in the political realm discredit, divide and conquer the Hindus. In short, the compelling reasons for the Aryan invasion theory were neither literary nor archeological but political and religious that is to say, not scholarship but prejudice. Such prejudice may not have been intentional but deep-seated political and religious views easily cloud and blur our thinking.

It is unfortunate that this this approach has not been questioned more, particularly by Hindus. Even though Indian Vedic scholars like Dayananda saraswati, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Arobindo rejected it, most Hindus today passively accept it. They allow Western, generally Christian, scholars to interpret their history for them and quite naturally Hinduism is kept in a reduced role. Many Hindus still accept, read or even honor the translations of the 'Vedas' done by such Christian missionary scholars as Max Muller, Griffith, MonierWilliams and H. H. Wilson. Would modern Christians accept an interpretation of the Bible or Biblical history done by Hindus aimed at converting them to Hinduism? Universities in India also use the Western history books and Western Vedic translations that propound such views that denigrate their own culture and country.

The modern Western academic world is sensitive to critisms of cultural and social biases. For scholars to take a stand against this biased interpretation of the 'Vedas' would indeed cause a reexamination of many of these historical ideas that can not stand objective scrutiny. But if Hindu scholars are silent or passively accept the misinterpretation of their own culture, it will undoubtly continue, but they will have no one to blame but themselves. It is not an issue to be taken lightly, because how a culture is defined historically creates the perspective from which it is viewed in the modern social and intellectual context. Tolerance is not in allowing a false view of one's own culture and religion to be propagated without question. That is merely self-betrayal.

Caste problem in india

From the book "Swami Vivekananda On India and Her Problems".

CASTE PROBLEM IN INDIA

"I have a message for the world, which I will deliver without fear and care for the future. These institutions have been necessary to protect us as a nation, and when this necessity for self-preservation will no more exist, they will die a natural death. In religion there is no caste. A man from the highest caste and a man from the lowest may become a monk in India and the two castes become equal. The caste system is opposed to the religion of Vedanta.

Caste is a social custom, and all our great preachers have tried to break it down. From Buddhism downwards, every sect has preached against caste, and every time it has only riveted the chains. Beginning from Buddha to Rammohan Ray, everyone made the mistake of holding caste to be a religious institution and tried to pull down religion and caste altogether, and failed.

In spite of all the ravings of the priests, caste is simply a crystallized social institution, which after doing its service is now filling the atmosphere of India with its stench, and it can only be removed by giving back to people their lost social individuality. Caste is simply the outgrowth of the political institutions of India; it is a hereditary trade guild. Trade competition with Europe has broken caste more than any teaching.

THE UNDERLYING IDEA OF THE CASTE SYSTEM

The older I grow, the better I seem to think of caste and such other time-honored institutions of India. There was a time when I used to think that many of them were useless and worthless, but the older I grow, the more I seem to feel a difference in cursing any one of them, for each one of them is the embodiment of the experience of centuries.

A child of but yesterday, destined to die the day after tomorrow, comes to me and asks me to change all my plans and if I hear the advice of that baby and change all my surroundings according to his ideas I myself should be a fool, and no one else. Much of the advice that is coming to us from different countries is similar to this. Tell these wiseacres, "I will hear you when you have made a stable society yourselves. You cannot hold on to one idea for two days, you quarrel and fail; you are born like moths in the spring and die like them in five minutes. You come up like bubbles and burst like bubbles too. First form a stable society like ours. First make laws and institutions that remains undiminished in their power through scores of centuries. Then will be the time to talk on the subject with you, but till then, my friend, you are only a giddy child."

Caste is a very good thing. Caste is the plan we want to follow. What caste really is, not one in a million understands. There is no country in the world without caste. Caste is based throughout on that principle. The plan in India is to make everybody Brahmana, the Brahmana being the ideal of humanity. If you read the history of India you will find that attempts have always been made to raise the lower classes. Many are the classes that have been raised. Many more will follow till the whole will become Brahmana. That is the plan.

Our ideal is the Brahmana of spiritual culture and renunciation. By the Brahmana ideal what do I mean? I mean the ideal Brahmana-ness in which worldliness is altogether absent and true wisdom is abundantly present. That is the ideal of the Hindu race. Have you not heard how it is declared he, the Brahmana, is not amenable to law, that he has no law, that he is not governed by kings, and that his body cannot be hurt? That is perfectly true. Do not understand it in the light thrown upon it by interested and ignorant fools, but understand it in the light of the true and original Vedantic conception.. If the Brahmana is he who has killed all selfishness and who lives to acquire and propagate wisdom and the power of love - if a country is altogether inhabited by such Brahmanas, by men and women who are spiritual and moral and good, is it strange to think of that country as being above and beyond all law? What police, what Military are necessary to govern them? Why should any one govern them at all? Why should they live under a government? They are good and noble, and they are the men of God; these are our ideal Brahmanas, and we read that in the SatyaYuga there was only one caste, and that was the Brahmana. We read in the Mahabharata that the whole world was in the beginning peopled with Brahmanas, and that as they began to degenerate they became divided into different castes, and that when the cycle turns round they will all go back to that Brahmanical origin.

The son of a Brahmana is not necessarily always a Brahmana; though there is every possibility of his being one, he may not become so. The Brahmana caste and the Brahmana quality are two distinct things.

As there are sattva, rajas and tamas - one or other of these gunas more or less - in every man, so the qualities which make a Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya or a Shudra are inherent in every man, more or less. But at time one or other of these qualities predominates in him in varying degrees and is manifested accordingly. Take a man in his different pursuits, for example : when he is engaged in serving another for pay, he is in Shudra-hood; when he is busy transacting some some piece of business for profit, on his account, he is a Vaishya; when he fights to right wrongs then the qualities of a Kshatriya come out in him; and when he meditates on God, or passes his time in conversation about Him, then he is a Brahmana. Naturally, it is quite possible for one to be changed from one caste into another. Otherwise, how did Viswamitra become a Brahmana and Parashurama a Kshatriya?

The means of European civilization is the sword; of the Aryans, the division into different varnas. This system of division into varnas is the stepping-stone to civilization, making one rise higher and higher in proportion to one's learning and culture. In Europe, it is everywhere victory to the strong and death to the weak. In the land of Bharata (India), every social rule is for the protection of the weak.

Such is our ideal of caste, as meant for raising all humanity slowly and gently towards the realization of the great ideal of spiritual man, who is non-resisting, calm, steady, worshipful, pure and meditative. In that ideal there is God.

We believe in Indian caste as one of the greatest social institutions that the Lord gave to man. We also believe that through the unavoidable defects, foreign persecutions, and above all, the monumental ignorance and pride of many Brahmanas who do not deserve the name, have thwarted in many ways, the legitimate fructification of this glorious Indian institution, it has already worked wonders for the land of Bharata and it destined to lead Indian humanity to its goal.

Caste should not go; but should be readjusted occasionally. Within the old structure is to be life enough for the building of two hundred thousand new ones. It is sheer nonsense to desire the abolition of caste.

INEQUALITY OF PRIVILEGE VITIATES THE SYSTEM

It is in the nature of society to form itself into groups; and what will go will be these privileges! Caste is a natural order. I can perform one duty in social life, and you another; you can govern a country, and I can mend a pair of old shoes, but that is no reason why you are greater than I, for can you mend my shoes? Can I govern the country? I am clever in mending shoes, you are clever in reading Vedas, that is no reason why you should trample on my head; why if one commits murder should he be praised and if another steals an apple why should he be hanged? This will have to go.

Caste is good. That is only natural way of solving life. Men must form themselves into groups, and you cannot get rid of that. Wherever you go there will be caste. But that does not mean that there should be these privileges. They should be knocked on the head. If you teach Vedanta to the fisherman, he will say, "I am as good a man as you, I am a fisherman, you are a philosopher, but I have the same God in me, as you have in you." And that is what we want, no privilege for anyone, equal chances for all; let everyone be taught that the Divine is within, and everyone will work out his own salvation. The days of exclusive privileges and exclusive claims are gone, gone for ever from the soil of India.

UNTOUCHABILITY - A SUPERSTITIOUS ACCRETION

Formerly the characteristic of the noble-minded was - (tribhuvanamupakara shrenibhih priyamanah) "to please the whole universe by one's numerous acts of service", but now it is - I am pure and the whole world is impure. "Don't touch me!" "Don't touch me!" The whole world is impure, and I alone am pure! Lucid Brahmajnana! Bravo! Great God! Nowadays, Brahman is neither in the recesses of the heart, nor in the highest heaven, nor in all beings - now He is in the cooking pot!

We are orthodox Hindus, but we refuse entirely to identify ourselves with "Don't- touchism". That is not Hinduism; it is in none of our books; it is an orthodox superstition, which has interfered with national efficiency all along the line. Religion has entered in the cooking pot. The present religion of the Hindus is neither the path of Knowledge or Reason - it is "Don't-touchism". - "Don't touch me", "Don't touch me" - that exhausts its description.

"Don't touchism" is a form of mental disease. Beware! All expansion is life, all contraction is death. All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life. See that you do not lose your lives in this dire irreligion of "Don't- touchism". Must the teaching (Atmavat sarvabhuteshu) - "Looking upon all beings as your own self" - be confined to books alone? How will they grant salvation who cannot feed a hungry mouth with a crumb of bread? How will those, who become impure at the mere breath of others, purify others?

We must cease to tyrannize. To what a ludicrous state are we brought! If a bhangi comes to anybody as a bhangi, he would be shunned as the plague; but no sooner does he get a cupful of water poured upon his head with some muttering of prayers by a padri, and get a coat to his back, no matter how threadbare, and come into the room of the most orthodox Hindu, I don't see the man who then dare refuse him a chair and a hearty shake of hands! Irony can go no farther.

Just see, for want of sympathy from the Hindus, thousands of pariahs in Madras are turning Christians. Don't think that this is simply due to the pinch of hunger; it is because they do not get any sympathy from us. We are day and night calling out to them "Don't touch us! Don't touch us!" Is there any compassion or kindliness of heart in the country? Only a class of "Don't-touchists" ; kick such customs out! I sometimes feel the urge to break the barriers of "Don't-touchism", go at once and call out, "Come all who are poor, miserable, wretched and downtrodden", and to bring them all together. Unless they rise, the Mother will not awake.

Each Hindu, I say, is a brother to every other, and it is we, who have degraded them by our outcry, "Don't touch", "Don't touch!" And so the whole country has been plunged to the utmost depths of meanness, cowardice and ignorance. These men have to be lifted; words of hope and faith have to be proclaimed to them. We have to tell them, "You are also men like us and you have all the rights that we have."

SOLUTION OF THE CASTE PROBLEM

Our solution of the caste question is not degrading those who are already high up, is not running amuck through food and drink, is not jumping out of our own limits in order to have more enjoyment, but it comes by every one of us fulfilling the dictates of our Vedantic religion, by our attaining spirituality and by our becoming ideal Brahmana. There is a law laid on each one of you in this land by your ancestors, whether you are Aryans, or non-Aryans, rishis or Brahmanas or the very lowest outcaste. The command is the same to you all, that you must make progress without stopping, and that from the highest man to the lowest pariah, every one in this country has to try and become the ideal Brahmana. This Vedantic idea is applicable not only here but over the whole world.

The Brahmana-hood is the ideal of humanity in India as wonderfully put forward by Shankaracharya at the beginning of his commentary on the Gita, where he speaks about the reason for Krishna's coming as a preacher for the preservation of Brahmana- hood, of Brahmana-ness. That was the great end. This Brahmana, the man of God, he who has known Brahman, the ideal man, the perfect man, must remain, he must not go. And with all the defects of the caste now, we know that we must all be ready to give to the Brahmanas this credit, that from them have come more men with real Brahmana-ness in them than from all the other castes. We must be bold enough, must be brave enough to speak their defects, but at the same time we must give credit that is due to them.

Therefore, it is no use fighting among the castes. What good will it do? It will divide us all the more, weaken us all the more, degrade us all the more. The solution is not by bringing down the higher, but by raising the lower up to the level of the higher. And that is the line of work that is found in all our books, in spite of what you may hear from some people whose knowledge of their own Scriptures and whose capacity to understand the mighty plans of the ancients are only zero. What is the plan? The ideal at the one end is the Brahmana and the ideal at the other end is the chandala, and the whole work is to raise the chandala up to the Brahmana. Slowly and slowly you will find more and more privileges granted to them.

I regret that in modern times there should be so much discussion between the castes. This must stop. It is useless on both sides, especially on the side of the higher caste, the Brahmana, the day for these privileges and exclusive claims is gone. The duty of every aristocracy is to dig its own grave, and the sooner it does so, the better. The more he delays, the more it will fester and the worse death it will die. It is the duty of the Brahmana, therefore, to work for the salvation of the rest of mankind, in India. If he does that and so long as he does that, he is a Brahmana.

Any one who claims to be a Brahmana, then, should prove his pretensions, first by manifesting that spirituality, and next by raising others to the same status. We earnestly entreat the Brahmanas not to forget the ideal of India - the production of a universe of Brahmanas, pure as purity, good as God Himself : this was at the beginning, says the Mahabharata and so will it be in the end.

It seems that most of the Brahmanas are only nursing a false pride of birth; and any schemer, native or foreign, who can pander to this vanity and inherent laziness, by fulsome sophistry, appears to satisfy more.

Beware Brahmanas, this is the sign of death! Arise and show your manhood, your Brahmana-hood, by raising the non-Brahmanas around you - not in the spirit of a master - not with the rotten canker of egoism crawling with superstitions and charlatanry of East and West - but in the spirit of a servant.

To the Brahmanas I appeal, that they must work hard to raise the Indian people by teaching them what they know, by giving out the culture that they have accumulated for centuries. It is clearly the duty of the Brahmanas of India to remember what real Brahmana-hood is. As Manu says, all these privileges and honors are given to the Brahmana because, "with him is the treasury of virtue". He must open that treasury and distribute to the world.

It is true that he was the earliest preacher to the Indian races, he was the first to renounce everything in order to attain to the higher realization of life, before others could reach to the idea. It was not his fault that he marched ahead of the other castes. Why did not the other castes so understand and do as they did? Why did they sit down and be lazy, and let the Brahmanas win the race?

But it is one thing to gain an advantage, and another thing to preserve it for evil use. Whenever power is used for evil it becomes diabolical; it must be used for good only. So this accumulated culture of ages of which the Brahmana has been the trustee, he must now give to the people, and it was because he did not open this treasury to the people, that the Muslims invasion was possible. It was because he did not open this treasury to the people from the beginning, that for a thousand years we have been trodden under the heels of everyone who chose to come to India; it was through that we have become degraded, and the first task must be to break open the cells that hide the wonderful treasures which our common ancestors accumulated; bring them out, and give them to everybody, and the Brahmana must be the first to do it. There is an old superstition in Bengal that if the cobra that bites, sucks out his own poison from the patient, the man must survive. Well then, the Brahmana must suck out his own poison.

To the non-Brahmana castes I say, wait, be not in a hurry. Do not seize every opportunity of fighting the Brahmana, because as I have shown; you are suffering from your own fault. Who told you to neglect spirituality and Sanskrit learning? What have you been doing all this time? Why have you been indifferent? Why do you now fret and fume because somebody else had more brains, more energy, more pluck and go than you? Instead of wasting your energies in vain discussions and quarrels in the newspapers, instead of fighting and quarreling in your own homes - which is sinful - use all your energies in acquiring the culture which the Brahmana has, and the thing is done. Why do you not become Sanskrit scholars? Why do you not spend millions to bring Sanskrit education to all the castes of India? That is the question. The moment you do these things, you are equal to the Brahmana! That is the secret power in India.

The only safety, I tell you men who belong to the lower castes, the only way to raise your condition is to study Sanskrit, and this fighting and writing and frothing against the higher castes is in vain, it does no good, and it creates fight and quarrel, and this race, unfortunately already divided, is going to be divided more and more. The only way to bring about the leveling of castes is to appropriate the culture, the education which is the strength of the higher castes.

Caste System : Against the Spirit of Varna Vayavastha

The Spirit of Varna Vayavastha

Ancient India had Varna System not the caste system. Varnameans "Characterstics/skill/quality/color". As the Varna System eroded in its spirit, it became cast system of present. Fortunately once again we no longer believe in the bad practice of "Caste System" rather we believe in the Varna System which is natural, and it will always be there as nature never creates to living being of the same qualities. Every body is free to develop her/his skills (varna) and get the employment appropriate for her/his skills(Varna).

In Ancient India, there existed mainly four types of work.

1)Brahaman:- Those who had more inclination towards Adhyatm (spiritual science), spent their time in understanding Braham

2) Chatriya:- Those who had more inclination towards war and authority, took part in defending and organizing the Rajya (kingdom) and Praja (public) and sometimes expanding their Rajya

3)Vaishya:- Those who had more inclination towards business activities were involved business activities

4)Shudra:- Those who had no particular interest, they helped others in their activities.

One could change one's work (varna). For example once when kings (chatriya) became without control, then Rishi Parushram, gave up his basic inclination of Adhyatm and started punishing kings. Thus he switched his job from "understanding Braham" to "managing the society for its good". And he adopted Chatriya Dharma.

In the beginning people were attributed to the one of the four categories based on their merits. But later as the system degraded that attribution method transformed to by birth. This change was natural though but not good in the long run, which has lead to this caste divide.

We should know that Varna is dynamic in nature. People have different Varna or aptitude. And depending on the work needs of the socity they adopt their choice of work.

Depending on time, society has different type of work challenges. And those work types of a given time are caste for that time(if we want to define in ancient sense). Caste (Work) Pride is made by man and it does not have any value with respect to one's status. One with good character and knowledge in one's work is the best and respectable to society.

As Krishn in Bhagvadgita says- Karmah Yogasu Kaushalam. It means that the expertise in the work is Yoga.

Let us live in Veda's spirit that is-
"Sarvey Bahavantu Sukhinah| Sarvey Santu Niramaya||
Saryey Bhadrani Pashyanu, Ma Kaschid Dukh Bhag Bhavet||

Meaning: May ALL be happy. May all be diseaseless. May ALL see good things(good of others). May no body get sadness.

And in last let us pray the Braham(the creator of everything) to give us Wisdom. Let us all be Brhaman by always thinking about Braham.

@ S.Srivastava

Sanskrit

It was in 6th standard when i was first introduced to the divine language "sanskrit" as a compulsory language in my then curriculum. If it had not been a compulsory language, i had never opted for this as at that time sanakrit was like monster on shoulder and used to give some of very sleepless dreams before examinations. But i never had thought that one day this very divine language will change my life for ever, for good. Now it is a essential part of my daily life.

The Sanskrit alphabet is called "devanagari" and literally means "cities of the gods". Rishis discovered Sanskrit and used it to create the mantras. These mantras were made up of a combination of sound vibrations, which when recited had a specific effect on the mind and the psyche. In the times of the Rishis, the main aim was to attain the truth, and Sanskrit - the perfect tool was found to be the best medium.
Due to its specificity and purity, this seemed the best language with which to understand God's creation

Sanskrit is the common language of the Hindu Scriptures. It is the oldest language in the world. It is the language of the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata , Ramayana and the Puranas. Sanskrit literature is easily the richest literature in the history of mankind. The word Sanskrit literally means "Perfected Language" or "Language brought to formal perfection". That is the reason why NASA declared it to be "the only unambiguous language on the planet".

Sanskrit is a scientific and systematic language. Its grammar is perfect and has attracted scholars worldwide.Sanskrit is also the mother of all Indo-European languages and the big sister of Greek and Latin. It is the origin of all the Indian languages.

For being so pure and only true language,it is being used for mantar chanting and prayers.

hare krishna.

Hindutva

"Hindutva" is derived from the two terms 'Hindu Tattva", which literally mean "Hindu Principles". Now the question is, what are Hindu Principles and what comprises the "Hindutva" Outlook?

To answer this question we would have to begin with the history of the Hindus. The history of the Hindus is the history of a civilization which has developed in its natural state, without interruption, since antiquity. Its age is dated to be between five and nine thousand years. Hence Hindu History is a prototype of how human civilization would have looked, if civilization all across the globe had been allowed to develop in its natural state. This is the relevance for us to study Hindu Civilization, Hindu History and Hindu Culture.

The evolution of Hindu Civilization can be considered to be natural and continuing as there is no last messiahin the Hindu world view.
In fact this is what distinguishes Hindu Civilization from the rest. And this is why Hinduism is called a Living Idea, guided by the sum total of human wisdom that is not considered to be embodied in one person, or one book, or one period of human history. Hence the term "Living". Hindutva is the articulation of this idea of continuity of freedom of thought from which emerge the multifarious Hindu Principles.

Two instances of Hindu Principles that symbolize the outcome of freedom of thought are the pronouncements made not today, but four thousand years back by unnamed rishis (Hindu ascetics) that, "This world is one family" (Vasudaiva Kutumbakam) and that "The Universal Reality is the same, but different people can call it by different names" (Ekam Sat Viprah Bahuda Vadanti). In these two proclamations made in ancient Hindu India, we see the seeds of globalism and freedom of
thought, four thousand years before the world was to become the global village of today. Thus in its true essence, Hindutva is a stridently assertive rational-humanist line of reasoning. . At the level of practice, the Hindutva outlook boils down to upholding righteousness (Sat-guna) and fighting ignoble attitudes (Dur-guna). Taking poetic license, we can describe the practitioners of this outlook as "Heenam Naashaayati iti Hinduhu" (Those who uphold righteousness and fight ignobleness are Hindus).

Thus, far from being a narrow nationalistic doctrine, Hindutva is in its true essence, 'a timeless and universal compilation of human wisdom'. Hence it is also called "Sanatana" which means, something that is "forever continuing."

many thanks to mr Sudheer Birodkar for his worderful insight.

The Guiding Light Of My Life "Shri Bhagwad Gita"

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_q6D85OP56gk/SJBGG8cXQgI/AAAAAAAAAAM/PNSlOrAboDg/s320/60802d68-133a-405d-ac91-8dccd041530d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228756252495397378" />
Shri bhagwad gita is one of the most sacred and popular religious scripture of "sanatan dharma".Its a part of mahabharat writen by lord vedya veyas. Hindu consider the bhagwad gita as a direct message from there god "Vishnu" in the avatar of krishna. Bhagwad gita which is known as the summarization of all the teachings of vedas, is a long dialogue between lord krishna and arjun in the battle field of kurushetra in mahabharat. The knowledge of gita tells us how we should carry ourselves in our day to day lives, keeping lord vishnu at the center of our awareness and activities, our action as a way of sacrificail offerings and accepting krishna as the facilitator for the things happening in our life. But whom to look after hindus, who gona serve we hindus, what about hindu nationalists.

we have seen the kind of reception hindus have got around the world, especially in islamic countries. Moreover we dont have to go far away, we can well see the plights of kashmiri pundits in our own country and hypocrisy of pseudo-secularists.

Not only communities have successful created strong business lobbies but also able to take control of internation and local media. CNN can be seen in this light as it will allow to broadcast every thing except crap created by its own army.

So for a strong and powerful india and hindu community its a high time that hindus should start taking over business enterprises and create a powerful hindu lobby. The seeds of hindu lobby has been ploughn when NDA lead by BJP single handedly created a huge "cash reserve" of $ 40 billion with the help of nationalist NRI's after seviour sanction put on us with pokhranII

And offcourse how can we forget narender modi attracting 5o$ billion of investment mainly though gujarati NRI's.

Song which should have been our national anthem

<img style="float:right;
